The 1964 Democratic Convention
The Convention in Atlantic City was deeply divided between Hubert Humphrey and George Wallace and with Douglas throwing her support to Wallace and Johnson throwing his support to Humphrey this didn't help the chaos. After 8 ballots the battle came to the party bosses as both candidates approached them to give there sway towards either of them with Wallace saying that Humphrey would loose the election again like he had done in 1960 as Humphrey would say that for the good of the party and to keep the party united to nominate him instead of Wallace. After several more ballots, George Wallace pulled out a small margin of victory over Humphrey on the 11th ballot. Wallace would soon pick Helen Douglas as his VP, which some Democrats saw as "extreme" but he wished to have a different ticket and also try and steal California away from Warren in the Election. George Smathers and other southern Democrats would call that the Democrats not support the Wallace/Douglas ticket because of Civil Rights which had nearly torn the party apart in the 1956 Election and said that Smathers and other Southern Democrats would support a Unpledged Electors in the Election.

The 1964 Republican Convention
After the primaries Goldwater wouldn't endorse Warren for the nomination and even wouldn't finally back him at the Convention in San Francisco and would keep the small number of delegates and challenge Warren for the nomination, Goldwater would be crushed easily and Warren would be renominated and VP Nelson Rockefeller would also be renominated for the Election.

The Presidential Election of 1964
Wallace would have a hard time in the election as a nice number of people in the south would support the Unpledged Electors and would have to campaign to hold on to some of the southern states and this would take time away from him to campaign elsewhere, Lyndon Johnson would campaign hard for Wallace in Texas and give him a small margin of victory there, Helen Douglas wouldn't take California away from Warren but would make it close by 8%. Warren would effectively win the election and continue the grand Dynasty of the Republican Party.

Earl Warren/Nelson Rockefeller: 423 EV 53.7 PV
George Wallace/Helen Douglas: 108 EV 41.5 PV
Unpledged Electors: 7 EV 4.4 PV
Other (Prohibition, Socialist Labor, etc) 0 EV 0.4 PV

The 1964 Congressional Elections
The Democrats would gain more seats in the House but there push in the Senate would be stopped for now as the Democrats would lose one seat to the Republicans in the Senate.

House Results:
Republican: 237 (-4)
Democrats: 197 (+5)
Independents: 1 (-)
American Labor: 0 (-1)

Senate Results:
Republican: 53 (+1)
Democrats: 47 (-1)

The Second Term of Earl Warren (1965-1969)

President Warren and Vice President Rockefeller would continue the legacy for the Republicans after now a guaranteed 4 more years would bring from 1949 to now 1969 to now 20 years of Republicans. On January 20th both the incumbent President and VP would be sworn in for there second term, President Earl Warren would say that he would continue the fight to put a man on the Moon by now the end of his second term and would work to push for his "War on Poverty". Ranger 8 would send back pictures of possible landing sites for the Apollo Program Astronauts and then would crash into the surface of the Moon after a successful mission. Soon after the Ranger 9 would become one of the last in a series of unmanned Lunar space probes, moving ever so closer to their ultimate goal of sending a man to the Moon. The Soviets would try to counter by sending Cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov in his spacecraft the Voskhod for a 2 for 12 minutes space walk, becomes the first ever Soviet to walk in space. Martin Luther King Jr. would have a state march in Alabama, traveling from the most southern tip to the state capitol of Montgomery to continue to put out the message of that still after the great help that the national Government and some of the state level governments had done to help the black community in the south but still states in the south still held out against Civil Rights and beatings and other horrid things done to blacks our occurring in several of the southern states and this can't be ignored.

In the Dominican Republic a democratic coup would be tried and would send the Dictator Rafael Trujillo into hiding to command his loyal forces in safety. A civil war would soon erupt on the small nation and the US would funnel weapons and funds to the democratic rebels as the Soviet Union would also send weapons and arms but to the Dictatorship run portion of the nation though neather superpowers would actually send in any of there own army but would sit back and let the war play out for now. President Warren would sign into effect the Social Security Expansion Act of 1965, apart of Warren's "War on Poverty" and the act would result in the passing of two bills: Medicare and Medicaid. The act provided federal health insurance for the elderly that are over 65 and also for poor families. Gemini 5 would be launched with the Astronauts Gordon Cooper and Pete Conrad on the first 1-week flight, as  well as the first test of fuel cells for electrical power. The Civil War in the Dominican Republic was becoming worse as blood was spilled on both sides and numerous refugees from the Dominican Republic would flee to the US in hopes to escape from the blood soaked war raging in there home nation, they would soon to begin to group in parts of Florida and New York City. The Soviets would do something strange for the Space Race after they would launch the  Venera 3 space probe towards Venus, this was apart of the Soviet Venera Program that was a string of missions to learn about the planet Venus, with this the US government seemed to see as a possible true Space Race was out of the question as NASO and the US continued to close the gap between reaching the Moon and the Soviets weren't trying to compete for the Moon now.

What was thought of as a quick and hopefully not that bloody of a coup has become the Dominican people's worst nightmare as the Dictator Rafael Trujillo clings to his remaining power he has in the split "Republic". The US and the Soviet Union were beginning to poise themselves to send at least some "Peacekeeper" forces into the Dominican Civil War to aid the Democratic South and the Dictatorship North. In mid February Peacekeepers from a joint UN/United States/Cuba lead forces into try and decide to stop the violence in the Dominican Republic, with this turn of events the USSR would back away from the idea of sending troops to aid Trujillo in his fight against the Southern Dominican Republic. The Peacekeepers would first touch ground at the capitol of the Southern Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo de Guzman and would meet with the assembled Southern Dominican Army, a not all that trained one at that and soon the US would become the major teacher to the Army there and would only be used in dire circumstances and relief to the citizens of the Southern Dominican Republic in the war torn areas of the country.

Map of the Former Dominican Republic, North and South Dominican Republics
North Dominican People's Republic - Trujillo de los Caballeros
South Dominican Republic - Santo Domingo de Guzman

As the battle raged in the former Dominican Republic, things were more slower at the American mainland as President Warren would create the secretary position of Housing and Urban Development(HUD) to help with Warren's "War on Poverty" and would appoint  Robert C. Weaver as the first HUD Secretary and also would become the first black cabinet member. The Space Race would continue on as the US would launch Gemini 8 and it would dock with  an Agena target vehicle to develop and practice orbital space rendezvous and docking techniques in preparation of the Apollo Program. Not to be outdone the Soviet Union would launch their satellite Luna 10 and would become the first Soviet satellite to enter the orbit of the Moon. The NASO built Surveyor 1 would land safely on the Oceans of Storms on the Moon in it's mission to gain information about the landing technique, the radar reflectivity of the lunar surface, bearing strength of the lunar surface, and the spacecraft temperature. President Warren would easily sign the Freedom of Information Act or FOIA as it was called by some and would allows for the full or partial disclosure of previously unreleased information and documents controlled by the United States Government to the general public by request.

The 1966 Congressional Elections
The Congressional elections could be summed up with the word deadlocked. With the Senate remaining the same and the Democrats gaining only several seat in the House the Republicans still controlled the House and Senate, the 2 year Senator John Glenn(R-OH) would be reelected for 2 more years after a small margin of victory again.

House Results:
Republican: 235 (-2)
Democrats: 199 (+2)
Independents: 1 (-)

Senate Results:
Republican: 53 (-)
Democrats: 47 (-)

Other:
The California Gubernational Election would be covered again and would have the Union leader and former movie star Ronald Reagan running as a Republican for the Governorship against the incumbent Helen G. Douglas and Edmund "Pat" Brown. Reagan would run on a more reform campaign and smaller government and a strong conservative base would all help him in the election but he would loose the Governorship by 8% to the incumbents.

Helen G. Douglas/Edmund "Pat" Brown: 54% Popular Vote
Ronald Reagan/George Christopher: 46% Popular Vote

America continued it's Space Race and would mourn the tragedy on the Apollo 1 as three Astronauts Gus Grissom, Edward H. White and Roger Chaffee are killed by a fire in the spacecraft during a lauch pad test, President Warren addresses this and "People of America there are hurtles that must be overcome and this is one of them, these poor men gave there lives but not in vain and we must continue to push towards the Moon...".

The Outer Space Treaty would be signed by the United States, the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union begrudgingly of course after it's many failures in there space race against the US. This Outer Space Treaty would implace that any nation could not implace nuclear weapons or any other weapons of mass destruction in orbit around the Earth, on the surface of the Moon and on or around any other celestial bodies in space. President Warren and Vice President Rockefeller would say to the American people that "Now space has been set aside to a peaceful existence between the superpowers...".

The New America Program started by President Earl Warren would continue to push through "renovations" of the nation as Senator Ralph Yarborough(D-TX) who had backed several of the renovating bills into law and would push for the Bilingual Education Act at which was to help mainly Spanish speaking citizens and new immigrants to the US and President Warren would support it saying that "It is a good cause since America is the blending pot of people...".

The growing counter culture called Hippies would spring up after starting out small and soon spread from there home state of sorts California and spread to places like NY, New England and other major populated areas. These actions would catch the eye of Richard Nixon, a radio speaker in his home state of California and was called "Tricky Dick the Red Hater" after being defeated on numerous occasions in politics had taken a strong line on the Hippie craze and that the "movement will spread ever more red over the land and liberalism that the nation has endured for nearly twenty years..".

Greece would be taken over by a military dictatorship as George Papadopoulos would take the positions of Prime Minister, Regent and President over Greece and move to a censorship and ruthless government as they said it was the "Only was to stop the spread of Communism..". President Warren would say that he would not recognize the new junta in Greece and send it into a isolationism even though the new government had already settled for that before Warren had condemned them.

The Six Day War would occur with Israel taking on Egypt, Jordan, and Syria while several other Middle East nations would send help to the aggressors against Israel. The Israeli army would pull out stunning victories one after the other against there enemies as Britain and the US would say they would not get involve even with there support of Israel. The US would suffer an attack with the USS Liberty being attacked by mistake by Israeli forces in a chain of events and Israel would apologize for this. In the end Israel would grow to gain the  Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights.

In Cuba, Representative Fidel Castro would put what would be called the Translation Law or the Castro Bill and would have a massive translation of books to give the people of Cuba as much of a chance as America. Many of the Cuban officials see Castro as a rising star and a possible canidate for the Cuban Presidency in the future. Vice President Nelson Rockefeller would make a trip to the island nation and meet with Representative Fidel Castro on his many attempts and victories with his reformist laws.

The United States enters another primary season as peace leaders who favor ending the war in the former Dominican Republic like George McGovern(D-SD) and Eugene McCarthy(D-OR) announce there candidacy but after only several months into campaigning, McGovern's campaigns falls apart and he would endorse Governor John Kennedy(D-MA) for the nomination. Hubert Humphrey, Lyndon Johnson, Stephen Young and George Wallace would soon follow and declare there candidacy for the Democratic nomination in 1968.

1968 Democratic Convention
The nomination was all but locked up for John Kennedy as his major opponents Eugene McCarthy and George Wallace would continue to hope that they would be nominated. The party bosses were discouraged by the major frontrunners and that all of them would or have already had blows with the blue collar Democrats in the South but Governor John Kennedy would say that he "would deal" and Kennedy tried to take a more moderate approach and said that he would pick a southern for his Vice Presidential spot, this did give some hope to the party bosses that the Democratic Party would be united this election year and Kennedy won the nomination on the first ballot and chose surprisingly Harry F. Byrd Jr. for the VP spot and much of the Democratic Party would grudgingly support the ticket.

1968 Republican Convention
Vice President Nelson Rockefeller beat out smaller candidates like Barry Goldwater, Frank Carlson, Hiram Fong and James Rhodes and would decide to choose Michigan Governor George Romney as the VP slot saying that "this election will not be won by the south but by the Midwest..".

1968 American Independent Convention
The California based political party would nominate Richard Nixon as there candidate for President and Nixon would run on a hard line against Communism and after some debate would complement this by choosing former Agriculture Secretary Ezra Benson for VP. Some of the disgruntled southern Democrats would support the Nixon/Benson ticket for the 1968 election.

1968 Peace Convention
The young anti Dominican War party would nominate Martin Luther King Jr. and Benjamin Spock for there candidates and would also gain the support from Eugene McCarthy and his "Be Clean for Gene" support from the youths.

The Presidential Election of 1968
The campaign would be fierce as Kennedy would bring up the whole infidelity charges about Rockefeller divorcing his original wife and marrying a younger women and also used the rumors of that Rockefeller and Happy Murphy had had been cheating on there spouses. George Wallace had said that he new about this during 1964 but didn't use this to damage the Warren/Rockefeller ticket and ran a clean campaign and of course lost and Wallace would say that Kennedy is trying to paint himself as a different Democrat but is running the same campaign and could come back to hurt him. The Nixon/Benson ticket would campaign and say that Warren and the Republicans weren't going far enough to fight Communism and protecting America as the King/Spock ticket would campaign that "America should bring it's boys home before the Dominican War boils over into a bloody insurgent warfare...". John Kennedy would try and input his "Northern Plan" and would campaign in New England for a time and CT, MA and RI would solidly be in the Democrat corner but the upper half would be Republican and would use the scandal about Rockefeller to make people sway towards him in the West and the Midwest and would begin to work with the Democrat leaning state of Montana and soon November appeared and the presidency was now up in the air.

The First Term of John Kennedy (1969-1973)

"This will be a new path for America, not one that is just labled like New America, New Deal but this one will be real, this will be a New Journey for America...". John Kennedy would take the oath of office on January 20th, 1969 at the age of 52 and would lay out a Democratic Party oriented presidency after the Republicans had held the highest office in the land from 1949 to now 1969 and Kennedy's "New Journey" for America was about to begin but with his hopes that the Democrats would have had a turn around in both the House and Senate didn't come to fruition as the Senate went Democratic but the Republicans held a 20+ seats over the Democrats in the House. Kennedy's Inaugural Address would lay out his plans for America and would say that the war in the former Dominican Republic would be won with peace and honor and hoped that the war would be over by the end of his first term.

The Soviets couldn't keep up with the United States in the space race and surprisingly had turned there attention to Venus with the Venera 5 and the Venera 6 would continue the Soviets survey of Venus and the Soyuz 5 would continue to have some Soviets pleased but now the Space Race is near it's end and America is dominating.

After a search, Sirhan Sirhan would admit that he tried to kill the former presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy at his California victory rally and Sirhan would be tried and sentenced to 40 years in jail. President Kennedy would say that "Even though Mr. McCarthy was an opponent of mine and I am please that the McCarthy family will have justice finally for the damage to them".

The Apollo mission continues it's march towards the Moon as Apollo 9 which tested the lunar module and soon the Apollo 10 is prepared to have a full dress rehearsal for the moon landing. President Kennedy would give a few words "Good job boys.." in a courteous remark in one of his addresses over the Space Race.

After a short time as Solicitor General, Thurgood Marshall was appointed to fill the new vacany made by the death of Thomas Dewey who died of a sudden heart attack and would be apart of Kennedy's support for African Americans and Kennedy would say that "We are making history". Many saw this as meer publicity to beef up Kennedy's "New Journey" plan and Marshall was seen as inexperienced by his appointment so early into being Solicitor General.

What would become known as the Stonewall Riots in New York City between the New York police raids against gay bars and meetings of gay rights activists. This would set in motion when gay right activists in New York would assemble and hold rallies and protest and many people on both sides were weary and worried about what could happen. When a police raid on a gay bar would come to a riot when a crowd would surround the police at the gay bar and begin to riot against the New York Police and this would begin a movement and a starting point for Gay rights.

The Apollo mission cultivates into the Apollo 11 taking off on July 4th and heading towards the Moon. July 11th would be the day that Apollo 11 would land on the Moon's surface and would land as President's Warren Rederic that the crew of the first people on the surface of the Moon would be "one of diversity" would not come to pass as Kennedy steered it to more experienced ones and other possibles were knocked off and Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin would still be kept on the roster for the Moon landing. "One Small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" would be echoed by Neil Armstrong as he took the first steps on the moon. The Apollo mission that had had roots from President Harold Stassen and Earl Warren was now complete under President John F. Kennedy and this would be the shining day for America.

After the Moon landing and so much time and hope had now been proven that it could happen and with this America was "preoccupied" by this and the full attention came upon the war in the former Dominican Republic and as the Democrats were held in high favor because of the moon landing and now using this "New Journey" to try and continue there gains in the House and Senate in the late months of the year 1970.

The Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act is a United States federal law, passed in 1970, designed to limit the practice of smoking. It required a stronger health warning on cigarette packages, saying "Warning: The Surgeon General Has Determined that Cigarette Smoking Is Dangerous to Your Health". The act also banned cigarette advertisements on American radio and television. This would be that this "Would guarantee and healthy American future for our families..".

Apollo 13, the third lunar landing mission, is successfully launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying astronauts James A. Lovell, John L. Swigert, and Fred W. Haise. The spacecraft's destination was the Fra Mauro highlands of the moon, where the astronauts were to explore the Imbrium Basin and conduct geological experiments. April 13 - Oxygen tank No. 2 had blown up, disabling the normal supply of oxygen, electricity, light, and water. Lovell reported to mission control: "Houston, we've had a problem here," and the crew scrambled to find out what had happened. Several minutes later, Lovell looked out of the left-hand window and saw that the spacecraft was venting a gas, which turned out to be the Command Module's (CM) oxygen. The landing mission was aborted; new mission objective became to get the Apollo 13 crew home alive.

The Oregon vs Kennedy case would revolve around the issue of the age of voting in states.  Plaintiff "Oregon" was the U.S. state of that name. Defendant "Kennedy" was Robert Kennedy in his role as United States Attorney General. Congress had passed an act requiring all states to register citizens between the ages of 18 and 21 as voters. Oregon did not desire to lower its voting age to 18, and filed suit on the grounds that the act was unconstitutional. The Supreme Court found largely for Oregon, in that it found that while Congress could set requirements for voting in federal elections that it did not have the power to set the voting age for state elections. This would be quieted after which President Kennedy passed a amendment to the Constitution that made 18 the voting age for all of the states.

U.S. Senate rejects the McGovern-Hatfield amendment by a vote of 58-36. This legislation, proposed by Senators George McGovern of South Dakota and Mark Hatfield of Oregon, would have set a deadline of January 1, 1972, for complete withdrawal of American troops from the Former Dominican Republic. The Senate would beat it down as well as many Republicans and Democrats would go against this, including President Kennedy saying "that America can not have a deadline of sorts for the war in the former Dominican Republic and much can change in the time allotted...".

President John F. Kennedy signs a bill giving the District of Columbia representation in the U.S. Congress, with this Kennedy's approval ratings would continue it's slow rise and of course he would be liked in D.C. because of this.

In a televised speech, President John Kennedy announces a four-point proposal to end the war, based on the many cease-fire plans tried to pass in the US Congress. He proposed eventual withdrawal of U.S. forces, unconditional release of prisoners of war, and political solutions reflecting the will of the Dominican people. Though the plan would have some favor it wouldn't have a "deadline" and some anti war supporters called it "to vague" as others said it was a step to defeating the new governing leadership in the North Dominican People's Republic and ending the Dominican War in the hopeful future.

To show himself as a good President, John Kennedy would go on a tour of Europe. Ranging from the Eastern European nations to the American allied nations of Britain and France as Vice President Harry Byrd Jr would campaign for candidates in the upcoming 1970 Congressional Elections.

The 1970 Congressional Elections
The Peace party would put forth a slate of candidates after the "Failures of the Kennedy Administration about the Dominican War" and there shining leader Martin Luther King Jr. would run for the 9th congressional district against Dan Kuykendall(R-TN) and would have a suprising competitive campaign as many supporters from the Democrats candidate would then support the "King for Congress" and he would be barely elected over Kuykendall. The Democrats would have a growing support from the Senate and would gain several seats but because of the Peace party in play and there major campaign for House seats the Democrats would actually loose seats because of the Peace party and hand them over to the Republicans. George McGovern, a strong Anti - War Senator would be reelected as the Peace party would support him.

House Results:
Republican: 235 (+6)
Democrats: 199 (-6)
Independent: 0 (-1)
Peace: 1 (+1)

Senate Results:
Democrats: 56 (+4)
Republican: 44 (-4)

In a suprise on January 18th, 1971 Senator George S. McGovern (D-SD) begins an antiwar campaign for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination by vowing to bring home all U.S. soldiers from Vietnam if he is nominated over the incumbent John F. Kennedy. The McGovern campaign attracts many young people support but polling between McGovern and Kennedy show George McGovern far behind Kennedy for the nomination and other polls show him losing to the Republican candidate in a general election match up.

Apollo 14, piloted by astronauts Alan B. Shepard Jr., Edgar D. Mitchell, and Stuart A. Roosa, is successfully launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on a manned mission to the moon. After suffering some initial problems in docking the lunar and command modules, Shepard and Mitchell descended to the lunar surface on the third U.S. moon landing; Shepard and Mitchell remained on the lunar surface for nearly 34 hours, conducting simple scientific experiments, such as hitting golf balls into space with Shepard's golf club, and collecting 96 pounds of lunar samples. Apollo 14 safely returned to Earth.

President Kennedy would make a public appearance at Parliament Hall in Ottawa, Canada and would try and carry out the tight relationship that former President Harold Stassen had made with Canada during his tenure as President. Security was moderate as Canadian officials had informed the secret service about Quebecois nationalists in the area and also with the handful of anti Dominican War. President Kennedy would have the window down as he waved to the Canadian people and all this would quickly end as a gunman opened fire on the limousine and they would speed off as Kennedy was only grazed at best as the secret serviceman sitting in the front was hit terribly. The results came that Kennedy would live, the assassin Arthur Bremer would be beaten to death by the crowd before the police could stop them and the secret serviceman would die on the operating table. All this would circulate many rumours who Bremer was and could he have been working for someone but since the would be assassin was dead, Congress would form the Joint Committee on the Assassination Attempt on the President (JCAAP).

U.S. table tennis team begins a weeklong visit to the People's Republic of China (PRC) at the invitation of China's communist government. The well-publicized trip was part of the PRC's attempt to build closer diplomatic relations with the United States, and was the beginning of what some pundits in the United States referred to as "ping-pong diplomacy." Chinese table tennis team also toured America, causing a short-lived craze for table tennis. Soon after President Kennedy begin to stop the blockades of China put in place by Earl Warren and begin to open trade with the People's Republic. A uneasy relationship was formed as the US had ties to Taiwan and now China.

President John F. Kennedy nominates Lewis F. Powell and United States Attorney Ramsey Clark to the U.S. Supreme Court.

President John Kennedy signed a bill authorizing $5.5 million in funding to develop a space shuttle. Represented a giant leap forward in the technology of space travel; designed to function more like a cost-efficient "reusable" airplane than a one-use-only rocket-launched capsules; afforded NASA pilots and scientists more time in space with which to conduct space-related research.
