The Republican Primaries of 1948 would show a suprising growth of support for Harold Stassen since the 1944 primaries and the primaries would kick off in Wisconsin were Stassen would beat General Douglas MacArthur by about 5% and would gain the needed momentum. Nebraska would also have a Stassen win by about 9% against former nominee Thomas Dewey, the numbers began to show that if Stassen were to be nominated that he would win against the incumbent Harry Truman in the 1948 General Election. The Illinois would easily pass with favorite son Riley Bender taking nearly 97% of the vote. Heavy campaigning in Pennsylvania would be enough to win the Pennsylvania Primary by Stassen, after some thought Stassen would back away from the idea of campaigning in Taft's homestate of Ohio and instead focused on Oregon and New Jersey.

April 20th, 1948 - New Jersey Primary

Thomas Dewey: 40.6%
Harold Stassen: 35.8%
Douglas MacArthur: 8.0%
Arthur Vandenburg: 5.7%
Robert Taft: 5.5%
Others: 4.4%

May 4th, 1948 - Ohio Primary

Robert Taft: 67.1%
Harold Stassen: 32.9%

May 11th, 1948 - West Virginia Primary

Harold Stassen: 83.6%
Others: 16.4%

May 21st, 1948 - Oregon Primary

Harold Stassen: 52.8%
Thomas Dewey: 46.7%
Others: 0.5%

Harold Stassen
Robert Taft
Thomas Dewey
Earl Warren
Leverett Saltonstall
Riley Bender
Herbert Hitchcock

After defeating Dewey in Oregon, Dewey's support began to dwindle and any possibility of gaining the nomination was fading for him and Dewey would drop out a week later. Stassen would sail to the Convention in Philadelphia and on the second ballot Stassen would be nominated against the Isolationist Robert Taft and would choose Earl Warren as his Vice President. After some some debate the Conservatives and Liberals back the ticket.

The General Election campaigning began and Stassen would be the usual lively self as others said that Incumbent Harry Truman was a dull man compared to Stassen. People were energized by Stassen and Truman would quickly respond and attack Stassen at every turn in the campaign in hopes of rising in the polls after Truman had sunken far behind Stassen and the Republicans and now with the Dixiecrat's in play the Democrats were losing hope of a win in 1948. The two candidates would duke it out in debate after debate and both candidates would bee evenly matched to each other as a hard campaign was having a surge for Truman. Results were for the presidency were varied, with some showing that it was neck in neck or Stassen or even Truman was now in the lead, the polls were confusing to the American people in the 1948 Election and became increasingly confused as Election Day approached. The officially results showed the two candidates in a fight for electoral votes for a long while until Stassen finally pulled ahead and after Truman went to sleep Stassen would be crowned as the President Elect and the winner of the election. Harold Stassen would then show the famous "Stassen Defeats Truman!" Chicago Tribune issue, Stassen would remark "We'll I guess it was right, I won, American won this time, now it's time for America to have a New Deal..."

Republican - Harold Stassen/Earl Warren: 291 EV 48.8 PV
Democratic - Harry Truman/Alben Barkley: 209 EV 46.2 PV
Dixiecrat - Strom Thurmond/Fielding Wright: 39 EV 2.4 PV
Other (Socialist ,Progressive, etc) 0 EV 2.6 PV

The First Term of Harold Stassen (1949-1953)

When Stassen was officially sworn in as the 34th President of the United States by Chief Justice Frederick M. Vinson, Stassen was at the age of 41 making him the youngest President so far and at the time. His Inaugural Address would be poignant and outlined a revised version of Roosevelt's New Deal and that he would lead the nation into a new era, a Golden Era of sorts. Stassen's cabinet members would vary, with Arthur Vandenburg(R-MI) as his State Secretary, Dwight Eisenhower(I-KS) as his Defense Secretary and Thomas Dewey(R-NY) as Interior Secretary.

Some of the laws that Stassen could pass could likely be stopped by the House which had fallen in the hands of the Democrats during the House Election of 1948 while the Senate had remained in Republican hands. Some of the first laws to pass and be vetoed under the Stassen Administration were the Housing Act of 1949, one of the many new laws passed into law and were apart of Stassen's New Deal. The Privatized Health Care Act was passed to continue the steady alliance of Conservatives and President Stassen, though he would continue to ponder a more universal health care role.

The Berlin Air Lift would be left unfulfilled after Truman had left office and had left it in Harold Stassen's hands. Stassen would continue Truman's plans and after the airlift had shown strong support with the East German people and a strong disliking from the Soviets, the blockade would last until May 12th, 1949 at which the Soviet blockade would end and after being humiliated the Soviets would let American supply convoys move food and other supplies to Berlin after one minute after midnight. General Lucius Clay would come home to the United States and have a ticker tape parade in New York City in his honor because of the success of the Berlin Airlift.

Time passed, on August 29th, 1949 the Soviets detonated their first nuclear bomb "Joe 1" at which the design was a imitation of the American plutonium bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki in 1945. President Stassen would remark "I hope, along with all the other Americans that a hopeful peace can be insured to an end of this Cold Peace we live, at which we live with now a gun pointed at us as we aim right back...". 1950 would come and have Republicans and Democrats campaigning for the upcoming Midterm House and Senate elections. A waring in the Korean peninsula would prompt the United States and the Soviet Union to back either South Korea or North Korea, the beginning of the Korean War had begun with Communist and pro Democratic forces squaring off along the 38th parallel.

The 1950 Congressional Elections
Democrats would fiercely focus on winning as many Senate seats to gain a majority just like they have in Congress, with this some shoe in Republicans would be beaten from election or reelection, but even this couldn't stop the continual Republican surge.

House Results:
Democrats: 227 (-34)
Republicans: 206 (+35)
Independent: 1 (+1)
American Labor: 1 (-)

Senate Results:
Republicans: 58 (+5)
Democrats: 42 (-5)

This looks quite familar to both my original and present Herbert Hoover in 1920 timelines, I'm proud my traditions have no carried onto yet another person on the forum, with the first one being Ben Constine. I can now die a happy man. Hehe.

Although I believe your doing a good job at the moment Andy, it would be grand if you could include information on foreign affairs in your updates as well. I know I would like to know what's occuring in Australia at the moment Cheesy. As long as Ben Chifley does not suffer a stroke in June 1951 and the 1951 General Election is delayed in this TL, I shall be happy also.

President Stassen would also become involved more in the international spotlight, planning a tour of sorts to stop off in Britain, West Germany, Australia and Puerto Rico. The most different was the attack on Stassen by a communist supporter in West Germany but would survive unscathed, Australia had always been a strong ally of the United States, with the battle for the Prime Ministry was coming to a halt in the General Election of 1949 slowing down Stassen would appear just in time.

He would meet with the incumbent Prime Minister Ben Chifley to take about the alliance with the United States, politics in both countries and the Cold War. Chifley would be 63 while Stassen would be 41 but Stassen would give several good ideas to the Prime Minister, these ideas wouldn't save the Labour from having a Liberal elected to the Prime Ministry but they would use these ideas in the 1952 General Election. With December slowly drawing to a close, Stassen would go to Puerto Rico and celebrate Christmas Eve in San Juan, there he would outline the possibility of statehood for the territory.

Stassen would leave on December 25th, 1949 in an extravagant parade to celebrate Christmas and the union of Puerto Rico and the US mainland. After being driven through the streets a gun totting assassin would open fire on President Stassen, the man was a Puerto Rican nationalist called Griselio Torresola. The assassination attempt would fail, in a strange occurrence two assassination attempts had been tried against Harold Stassen and had lived unscathed. Stassen would soon go back to the US mainland to spend the rest of Christmas with his family.

Things were quickly changing in the United States, the UN made New York City as it's headquarters there, North Korean and Chinese forces would capture the South Korean city of Seoul and testing began on a more advanced nuclear bombs. The Rosenburg Trial would only be another part of the Red Scare in the US and Senator Joseph McCarthy(R-WI) would go on his Communist hunt and would declare that many people were undercover Soviet spy's, "McCarthyism" would blanket the nation for some time and McCarthy himself would go so far to say that because President Stassen softer tone on the Cold War made him a Communist and McCarthy would try to impeach Stassen but the idea died with only several of his supporters and himself backing impeachment.

The strong union of the US and the Oceania countries Australia and New Zealand would lead to the ANZUS(Australia,New Zealand,United States)Security Treaty was signed in early September of 1951. The United States was also going in the roaring 50's, with a golden age for the American people and with numerous new products being released to the US Stassen's New Deal was seemingly working out for the American people. Other news was former Australian Prime Minister Ben Chifley would grudgingly vote for incumbent PM Robert Menzies banking bill and Britain would reelect Winston Churchill as Prime Minister of Great Britain. After some debate to pass the 22nd Amendment and after President Stassen "If it is the wish of the incumbent President to run for a third term or possibly a fourth term just as one of our finest Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt had done...". The 22nd Amendment would effectively be beaten down by the Republicans in Congress when the Republicans and a coalition of sorts of Democrats voted to oppose the Amendment.

The 1952 Democratic Convention
The Democrats had 15 primaries to go through and many Democrats would call for Adlai Stevenson to join the presidential race but would continue to hold out and Senator Estes KeFauver(D-TN), an outspoken opposition to President Stassen and after winning 12 out of the 15 primaries he would lock up the nomination and gain the support of Adlai Stevenson at the Convention, KeFauver would be nominated and chose Harriman as his Vice President.

The 1952 Republican Convention
Incumbent Harold Stassen would run for reelection and easily lock up the nomination with only a scattered opposition to him in the primaries. Stassen and Warren were renominated at the Republican Convention with ease.

The Presidential Election of 1952
Stassen and KeFauver would duke it out in debates and on the campaign trail and polling would show that the race would be close and after Stassen used a "Solution to Korea" type campaign against KeFauver's "Find out what's going on in Korea" campaign and would take the lead in polls.

Harold Stassen/Earl Warren: 403 EV 55.2% PV
Estes KeFauver/Adlai Stevenson: 128 EV 44.1% PV
Other (Prohibition, Socialist, etc) 0 EV 0.4 PV

The 1952 Congressional Elections
After the Republican Surge of 1950, the Democrats would stand tall in the elections and have some success and triumph in this Congressional election. The Congressional Election would have the Republicans now having the majority in both the House and the Senate.

House Results:
Republican: 227 (+21)
Democrat: 206 (-21)
Independent: 1 (-)
American Labor: 1 (-)

Sentate Results:
Republican: 56 (-2)
Democrat: 44 (+2)

The Second Term of Harold Stassen (1953-1957)

Harold Stassen would be sworn in for his second term on January 20th, 1953. In his Inaugural Address President Stassen would outline his victory solution for the Korean War and that "Peace would be wishfully obtained by the end of this year for the Korean peninsula...". President Stassen would carry out his New Deal ideals and try for a more universal free enterprise were the Government and the people run equally with some run by the government and some run by the people. With the Senate and Congress in Republican hands they could nearly pass any law they wished, the only thing that would be a problem was the small majority they held in Congress and the Senate. After some talking with Defense Secretary Eisenhower, President Stassen would open up relations with Spain at the time was regarded as having a Fascist regime in power.

As 1953 passed on, it became clear that the Korean War was coming to an end and on July 27th, 1953 the Korean War would officially end when the US, China, North and South Korea would sign an armistice agreement. After this Operation Big Switch would occur and POW's from both sides would be returned to their respected nations, Korea was a success as many people saw it as and only being three years that flew by all that America knew that they won this day. On October 5th, 1953 Interior Secretary Thomas Dewey would be appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by President Harold Stassen, the Interior Secretary position would be filled by Fred Seaton after Dewey's departure.

1954 would be a golden year for America, after the victory in Korea the United States had a spring in it's step, the Berlin Conference would occur when ministers from the US, the UK, France and the Soviet Union at which the "Big Four" would discuss the settlement of the Korean War and the Indochina War being raged between France and the Viet Mihn. President Stassen would send supplies and money to military aid to Vietnam. President Stassen would remark about actual military intervention by the US into Vietnam with great caution "This nation doesn't need to tread down a road that leads to a blood bath in the Indochina Arena...".

On March 1st, 1954, four Puerto Rican nationalists would storm into the House of Representatives and open fire on the Representatives, wounding only 5 people in the attack and the nationalists would be caught, jailed and executed soon after. The five representatives that were wounded were Alvin Bentley(R-MI), Clifford Davis(D-TN), Ben Jensen(R-IO), George Fallon(D-MD) and Kenneth Roberts(D-AL). This attack would kill President Stassen's idea of an admission of Puerto Rico to the United States and for the rest of his term Stassen wouldn't touch the idea again. In other news Queen Elizabeth would become the first reigning monarch to visit Australia, meeting with the 67 year old Prime Minister Ben Chifley in a pleasent tour of the Dominion.

The 1954 Congressional Elections
The 1954 Congressional elections would continue the surge of Republicans in the House and the Democrats would only gain one more seat in the Senate but this would be only enough to keep the Democrats at 44 seats because of the lost seat to McCarthy. In the Senate Joseph McCarthy won back his Senate seat from the Democrats as a independent.

House Results:
Republican: 235 (+8)
Democrats: 197 (-9)
Independents: 2 (+1)
American Labor: 1 (-)

Senate Results:
Republican: 55 (-1)
Democrats: 44 (-)
Independents: 1 (+1)

After his reelection to the Senate, Joseph McCarthy(I-WI) would quickly begin his Communist hunt again and would start hearings to investigate the United States Army for being "soft" on the Communist threat. SEATO(South East Asian Treaty Organization) would be established to block the spread of Communism into the Oceanic regions and more of Asia, the headquarters would be implaced in Bangkok, Thailand. In mid December the Senate would vote to condemn Joseph McCarthy for his conduct that was "that tends to bring the Senate into dishonor and disrepute" to a vote of 70 against 24, they condemned McCarthy's actions.

President Stassen would push the Civil Rights Act of 1955 to give more rights to the blacks through out the nation, many southern Democrats would vote against this and call this "another Civil Rights proposal to jam it down the unwilling Southerner's throat" while others would call it a victory for the Constitution and the natural and unalienable rights for all people of America. The new Civil Rights Act would pass with enough  for it to pass but with growing hate for Stassen in the southern states, the major opposition to this was Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus. After President Stassen ordered that the 7th fleet of the US Navy to help the evacuation of the Republic of China's nationalist army to Taiwan was a success but the relations with the PRC was strained because of this.

President Stassen would begin to work on the statehoods for the Alaska Territory and the Hawaiian Territory, some politicians would see this as a copy of Stassen other idea to an admission of Puerto Rico to the US as the 49th state but this idea would gain popularity. The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1955 would pass which would create the United States Interstate Highways and would be the largest work program in American history. In surveys the GDP in the United States would be rated at an 9.1, the main reason for this was Stassen's New Deal style idea's and laws that he passed attributed to this growth. On September 24th, 1955 Defense Secretary Eisenhower would be rushed to the hospital because of  a myocardial infarction which would keep him in the hospital for several weeks, President Stassen would wish a fast and hopeful recovery to Eisenhower. With the Presidential Election of 1956 fast approaching there is talk of Harold Stassen running for a third term.

The 1956 Democratic Convention and Primaries

The primaries would have former 1952 nominee Estes KeFauver running again, VP nominee Adlai Stevenson, New York Governor Averell Harriman, Governor Frank Lausche of Ohio, Senate Minority Leader John McCormack and Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus. KeFauver would be hailed as the frontrunner in the race and after victories in New Hampshire and Minnesota this would only begin to solidify this. Florida would be close a 45-52-3 race with Stevenson and KeFauver facing off. Stevenson would pick up his home state Illinois, DC and Pennsylvania but his funds were depleting and he was defeated in California and dropped out. Ohio would go to the favorite son Frank Lausche and Orval Faubus would campaign all in Maryland and would win with a 39-31-30 margin of victory over KeFauver and the unpledged votes. KeFauver would win the nomination and have the delegates choose KeFauver's Vice President but John Kennedy would become his VP, this would outrage southern Democrats because of Kennedy's support of Civil Rights and many southerners would leave the convention and join with the States Rights Party.

The 1956 States Rights Convention

After joining with the States Rights Party and nominate Orval Faubus for President and John Sparkman for Vice President against IRS Commissioner Thomas C. Andrews and they would also beat him for the Constitution Party nomination as well. With this they would begin to campaign against the Republicans and Democrats in a fierce way.

The 1956 Republican Convention
After his high approval ratings, Harold Stassen would say that he would run for a third term of the presidency and would easily gain the nomination and again choose Earl Warren for his Vice President.

The Presidential Election of 1956
The election had been a shoe in for Stassen but with the States Rights in play they would sway some states to the Democrats but not enough for a win for them.

Harold Stassen/Earl Warren: 301 EV 50.4 PV
Estes KeFauver/John Kennedy: 161 EV 39.6 PV
Orval Faubus/John Sparkman: 45 EV 9.7 PV
Other (Prohibition, Socialist, etc) 0 EV 0.3 PV

The 1956 Congressional Elections
The Congressional Elections would show what the Presidential Election would show, a Republican landslide and the Republicans would triumph in both the House and Senate because of this, Joseph McCarthy would loose his seat to the Republicans in the elections.

House Results:
Republican: 240 (+5)
Democrats: 192 (-5)
Independents: 2 (-)
American Labor: 1 (-)

Senate Results:
Republican: 57 (+2)
Democrats: 41 (-3)
Independents: 0 (-1)
Independent/States Rights: 2 (+2)

The Third Term of Harold Stassen (1957-1961)

On January 20th, 1957 Harold Stassen would be sworn in for a third term, and in his Inaugural Address he would say that he would continue his New Deal with the nation and also continue the internationalism, the one major factor of this was the success of the Hungarian Revolution that was aided with guns and money secretly by the government and would overthrow the Communist Regime and put in place the 3rd Hungarian Republic that would leave the Warsaw Pact and reestablish free and open elections in the nation. The nation was under what seemed a everlasting prosperity and as America grew so did it's involvement in foreign affairs. Vietnam had always been unstable since the French had made it their colony and after it was lost to the Japanese during WW2, Communism had spread and the Viet Cong were growing.

The first nuclear powered submarine, the U.S.S. Nautilus would be launched in February and President Harold Stassen would personally attend the launch and would meet with Admiral Hyman Rickover the "Father of the Nuclear Navy" and would congratulate his genius and celebrate another one of America's advanced technology's. The Stassen Doctrine would be passed by the Congress and the Stassen Doctrine would mainly be to use armed forces upon request in response to a response of imminent or actual aggression against the United States. On June 8th, 1957 Defense Secretary Dwight Eisenhower suffered a massive stroke in his office and after nearly an hour he was found dead in his office, this would be a sad time for the American people and for Stassen who had gained a good friendship and respect for Eisenhower during his time as Defense Secretary.

The Civil Rights Expansion Bill of 1957 would expand the original Civil Rights Act of 1955 but it would meet with strong dislike from the Southern Democrats and the States Rights in the Senate and Strom Thurmond(D-SC) would make a 24 hour and 18 minute filibuster but quite a bit of Southern Democrats were unpleasant by this because they thought that Thurmond's defiance had made them look bad to the constituents, the other major supporter of Strom was Oraval Faubus(SR-AR) but the bill would still pass. The Little Rock Scare would be with Arkansas Governor Nathan G. Gordon would try and let 9 blacks into the Central High School but White's would be outraged and coalesce around the city and quickly protest it, Governor Gordon would call for President Stassen to send in the National Guard to protect the black students and this would be heard and National Guardsman would protect the "Little Rock 9".

With now the Russian satellite Sputnik moving across the sky, President Stassen would quickly go after the US space program and begin to push for "An American satellite in one Month" this would be fullfilled by Explorer 1. In an attempt to stop a possible attack from the Soviet Union, the US and Canada sign an agreement to create the North American Aerospace Defense Command(NORAD), meetings with President Stassen and Prime Minister John Diefenbaker would finalize this. After three months of transmissions from Explorer 1, President Stassen would speak of this about "How that man has only tasted the tip of Space Exploration and we must continue are search for more...". President Stassen's push for the admission of both Alaska and Hawaii would begin to bear fruit as he would sign the Alaska Statehood Act into law and make the territory the 49th state, soon afterwards the Hawaii Statehood Act would pass and make the island chain the 50th state.

The "Space Race" would begin to heat up after Congress would officially create the National Aeronautics and Space Organization(NASO) which had been already growing under the Stassen Administration at a fast rate, President Stassen would hail this as a "Glorious day for all of America as we begin to grab hold of space...". NASO would soon crank out the Pioneer 1 after only four months after there official creation and would quickly be followed with the success of Pioneer 2, many Americans now see them in the lead in the Space Race. In other news former Prime Minister Óscar Gans would be elected the 19th President of Cuba at which this was only possible because of the Stassen Administration of internationalism and would overthrow Batista as President after his coup in Cuba of Carlos P. Socarrás and President Stassen would fly to Havana to meet with new President Gans to commend him on his victory and would meet an young politician by the name of Fidel Castro who would speak with Stassen and thank him for the overthrow of Batista, Stassen would coin the term "Democratic Revolution" a word that would stick with Castro.

NASO would choose seven military pilots or what was called the "Mercury Seven" to become the first Astronauts as popularity of space exploration was beginning it's boom in America. The St. Lawrence seaway would open and Queen Elizabeth 2 and President Harold Stassen would both be there for the opening, Stassen would make a small speech "This will begin the bonds between the US and Canada, for the bonds of trade are the strongest as we two nations beckon in a Golden Age...". The Soviets would try and show they were also truly competing in the Space Race by launching Luna 2 and this would become the first spacecraft to reach the surface of the Moon, only with it crashing into the Moon's surface, the Soviets would begin to recover from this with there hopeful launch of Luna 3 and take some of the first pictures of the Moon's surface but would be robbed of this by the American built Columbia 2.

The 1958 Congressional Elections
The Republicans would go on with there domination of both the House and the Senate as things would continue as normal with Republican gains in the House and Senate.

House Results:
Republican: 243 (+3)
Democrats: 190 (-2)
Independents: 1 (-1)
American Labor: 1 (-)

Senate Results:
Republican: 58 (+1)
Democrats: 40 (+1)
States Rights: 2 (-)

The Democratic Primaries of 1960
With the major candidates John Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey, Lyndon Johnson and Adlai Stevenson vying for the nomination, many of the Democratic Party bosses are pushing for either Humphrey or Johnson instead of Kennedy after his loss in the VP slot in 1956 had given him a stink to him and some party bosses were turned away because he was Roman Catholic and with this the odds are against him.

In the other primaries Humphrey would not have that much of a problem in the other primaries and would sail through them and on to the Convention.

The 1960 Democratic Convention
Hubert Humphrey would easily gain the nomination after defeating Kennedy in the primaries and would decide to balance the ticket with a southerner and chose Lyndon Johnson for the Vice President spot. With this the Democrats would back away from the Civil Rights agenda they had as part of there plank to keep the Southern Democrats from breaking off even more and after this the States Rights Senators would pledge themselves to the Democratic Party once again.

The 1960 Republican Convention
Harold Stassen would go by his word and not seek reelection to a fourth term and would back his Vice President Earl Warren for the Republican nomination and Warren would easily gain the nomination and would have to choose from NY Governor Nelson Rockefeller, though some Republicans said that Rockefeller was only the Governor now for about 2 years and said to be inexperienced and put forth Prescott Bush's name as a possible runningmate for Warren but he went with Nelson Rockefeller as his VP.

The Presidential Election of 1960
The polls showed a Warren victory over Humphrey and Kennedy's lackluster campaigning for Humphrey in Massachusetts and other states would cost HHH several electoral vote rich states. As for Rockefeller on the ticket, he would push some voters to Humphrey in the west but it would make some states competitive but they would fall to Warren with only Montana giving itself to Humphrey by a 1.6% win. Warren and Rockefeller would win the election as expected.

Earl Warren/Nelson Rockefeller: 330 EV 53.5%
Hubert Humphrey/Lyndon Johnson: 207 EV 45.9%
Other (States Rights, Prohibition, etc) 0 EV 0.6 PV

The 1960 Congressional Elections
As Earl Warren would be easily elected President the Democrats would begin to make some gains in the Senate as they only gained one more seat in the House.

House Results:
Republican: 242 (-1)
Democrats: 191 (+1)
Independents: 1 (-)
American Labor: 1 (-)

Senate Results:
Republican: 54 (-4)
Democrats: 46 (+6)
States Rights: 0 (-2)

How did the moderate Republican ticket of Earl Warren and Nelson Rockefeller fail to win New Hampshire in 1960? If Richard Nixon can defeat John F. Kennedy in New Hampshire by several points in the RL 1960 Presidential Election, then surely Earl Warren would be able to comfortably defeat Hubert Humphrey there in this election. I do worry about your maps on ocassions.

The First Term of Earl Warren (1961-1965)

Earl Warren and Vice President Nelson Rockefeller would be sworn in by Chief Justice Thomas Dewey as the 35th President and 36th Vice President of the United States. In President Warren's inaugural address he would outline that he would continue down the road that Stassen had made and would continue to push for as he put it "We shall have men in outerspace by my end of my term as President to prove that the continual spirit of President Stassen will live on...". Warren would also say that he would continue to guide the US through it's Golden Age. As soon as Warren would get into office he would have to deal with the Space Race, NASO would send Ham the chimp up in the Mercury-Redstone 2 which were apart of the NASO Project Mercury in an attempt to test the rockets in space in hopes of the future to send men into space. The Soviets would try and do something in the space race by launching Venera 1 to Venus in an attempt to gain knowledge about the planet but it would be fruitless as the satellite would lose contact with Earth and wouldn't send back data after being sent out several months ago. Alan Shepard would soon become the first man in space on the Mercury-Redstone 3, with this President Warren would set his sights on the Moon.

Civil Rights would have success in several of the Southern states but a flash point in the south would show that hatred still very much existed with the fire bombing of a "Freedom Rider" Bus in Mississippi and Civil Rights protesters are beaten by a mob of people. Soon after Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett declares martial law in the state to stop "the disturbance of peace" in the state and would harshly deal with the Civil Rights activists, President Warren would soon be faced with either sending the National Guard into the state to protect the black protesters in Mississippi but as things began to get worse it seemed that the whole population of blacks in the state needed protecting, the National Guard was sent in and Governor Barnett would see this as a occupying army in another country. A historic making event occurred as Mississippi State Guard would march down the streets in several cities with Confederate flags flying and "Dixie" playing, the major flashpoint was in Jackson, Mississippi where Governor Barnett would march with the guards and after blacks would begin to protest this and National Guardsmen would say to stop the march but in some instance a black man would try to shoot Governor Barnett for revenge and soon the Mississippi Guardsmen would open fire on the man and kill him and soon let loose on the blacks as the National Guardsmen opened fire on the Mississippi Guards. The end result was the death and arrest of numerous Mississippi Guardsmen, the death of numerous National Guardsmen and blacks and would become an open aggression against the federal government since the Civil War and President Warren would quickly implace Rubel Phillips as Governor of Mississippi over the Lt. Governor Paul B. Johnson Jr. who had supported what former Governor Barnett had done. This would become known as the Mississippi Affair.

America was still shocked with the results in Mississippi, to raise America's spirits President Warren would say that he had worked with NASO and the Congress to declare the Apollo Program that would be put by President Warren "That the American people shall overcome this and we shall put a man on the Moon by the decades end...". Warren would continue the internationalism and with this he would go to the Vienna Summit at which President Earl Warren and Premier Nikita Khrushchev would meet to discuss the broader conflict in Indochina, nuclear disarmament and ideological musings, with this the two leaders had met several times but that was when Warren had been Vice President now he was leader of the free world and stood his ground to Khrushchev at the Summit and would prove that America wasn't weak and it's Commander if Chief wasn't either. The two men would also speak of Berlin and if the USSR would sign a treaty with East Germany and cut off access to the city of Berlin, Khrushchev told Kennedy, "Force will be met by force. If the US wants war, that's its problem." "It's up to the US to decide whether there will be war or peace." "The decision to sign a peace treaty is firm and irrevocable, and the Soviet Union will sign it in December if the US refuses an interim agreement.". Warren would make the historic remark "Then Premier you are in for a war, one that will be cold like a long winter.."

The United States and Cuba would sign another of it's trade pacts, this is seen as a threat to the Dominican Republic and the 70 year old Dictator Rafael Trujillo would counter with signing a similar trade pact with the USSR, this would of course outrage the US and some of its allies and soon after the Organization of American States(OAS) would suspend the Dominican Republic's membership. The US would soon put a trade embargo on all goods from the Dominican Republic to the US, this would of course only push Trujillo to the Soviets hands. The US would have another of it's golden moments as John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth, Glenn would orbit the Earth for nearly 5 hours and rotate around the planet 3 times and President Warren would congratulate the Astronaut Glenn on this achievement and President Warren would get a closeup of "Friendship 7" at which Glenn would be given a ticker tape parade soon after he arrived back home. President Warren would work with the CIA to plan the use of Dominican exiles for an invasion of sorts of the Dominican Republic at La Isabela, Puerto Plata province and would be called the La Islabela Landing but this plan would take some time to come to fruition.

President Warren's State of the Union Address would continue to outline that his plans to put a man on the Moon by the decades end and would continue to push other ideas with much vigor as well like Civil Rights for African Americans in the south and would work with the NAACP and several liberal and moderate Southern to try and obtain a more united south. He would also say to continue down the "Golden brick road" that America must continue it's internationalism in world affairs and continue to stand up to the Soviets and be a beacon of democracy. The La Isabela Landing would soon occur and would be a tragic lose for the exiles and would push the Dominican Republic to begin to have arms and goods being sent from the Soviet Union, this would lead up to when B-2 flights over the Dominican Republic confirmed that the Soviets had implaced nuclear arms in the nation, soon the Dominican Missile Crisis began. President Warren would consult his cabinet and several army generals on the issue, General Curtis LeMay would continue to say to strike the nation with military force as State Secretary Christian Herter(R-MA) would say to try and force Premier Nikita Khrushchev in a more peaceful way to remove the nuclear weapons from the Dominican Republic. Warren would soon decide to go with a peaceful forcing the Soviets to rid the Dominican Republic of the nuclear sites and after a 2 week wait for either the Soviets to remove the missiles or a nuclear war would ensue, Khrushchev would decide to remove the missiles from the Dominican Republic.

The 1962 Congressional Elections
The Democrats would continue their gain in the House and the Senate but with only taking one to two seats in the House and Senate.

House Results:
Republican: 241 (-1)
Democrats: 192 (+1)
Independents: 1 (-)
American Labor: 1 (-)

Senate Results:
Republican: 52 (-2)
Democrats: 48 (+2)

Other:
The major covered election would be the Gubernational Election in California were incumbent Governor William Knowland would be barely defeated by the Democrats nominee Senator Helen G. Douglas would defeat him by a 51% to 48% and 1% for other parties.

Helen G. Douglas/Edmund "Pat" Brown: 51% Popular Vote
William Knowland/Joseph Shell: 48% Popular Vote
Other(Independent, Socialist Labor, etc) 1% Popular Vote

After the success of the disarmament of the Dominican Republic, the American people had a sigh of relief, the US would still stand against the Soviet Union and the close Dominican Republic. The national stage was focused on the South as President Warren had scheduled a tour of the South, from Richmond to Birmingham. Warren would make visits to the new Alabama Governor Lurleen Wallace and former Governor George Wallace and would congratulate them on their Civil Rights Protection in the state. President Warren would face near assassination after a disgruntled southerner tried to assassinate the President but the bullet would only graze him and the would be assassin would be jailed, President Warren would be sent to the nearest hospital to treat his wound. President Warren would easily recover from this attack and return to Washington D.C. After President Warren left Alabama the Civil Rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. would write his famous "Letter from Alabama Island" which would point out that how that the state of Alabama has become more and more of a haven for blacks as the state bordering Alabama, Mississippi has a near zero tolerance for Civil Rights Activists and even under the installed Republican Governor Rubel Phillips there was a burning hatred for blacks in Mississippi.

Soon Mercury 9 would be launched and this would become the last of the Mercury Program for NASO, President Warren would meet with Gordon Cooper to congratulate him on this historic moment and would announce to the American people that all that remains is the Apollo Program to put and man on the Moon and soon work begins to complete the vision as America rejoices for another triumph over the Soviet Union. This would soon be followed by the Vostok 6 which would carry Soviet Cosmonaut  Valentina Tereshkova, becoming the first women ever to be in space and this would be a small prick to the American NASO and the American people but President Warren would soon send out that when the American foot touches the surface of the Moon, that the crew will be one of bi-culturalism. After some debate Martin Luther King, Jr. delivers his "I Have A Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to an audience of at least 250,000 during the March on Washington for Real Unity and Freedom, the major thing that would be remembered is "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal... ". King would be remembered as a savior of sorts to many blacks all across the country as some whites would applaud him for his actions to continue to push for the Constitutional rights for all people as the other whites, particularly in the South see recoil in horror to this as the nation now had virtually accepted Civil Rights on account to the help from former President Stassen and President Warren.

The 1964 Election is soon approaching but the year opens with a early State of the Union Address by President Warren that would continue it's outline for the Space Race and would also outline it's plan to fight poverty in the United States, Democrats would applaud this and support President Warren's "War on Poverty". The ratification of the 24th Amendment would pass with a large support, the Amendment would prohibit the use of poll taxes in national elections with only four states still using them: Virginia, Mississippi, Texas and Arkansas would still use the poll taxes. NASO would launch the Ranger 6 on a mission to carry television cameras and then crash-land on the Moon to gain high quality pictures of the Moon's surface. Soon the Democratic and Republican Party Primaries soon begin with Earl Warren with little resistance and a shoe in for the nomination, the Democrats on the otherhand had a large field of candidates with former Alabama Governor George Wallace(D-AL), Governor Helen G. Douglas(D-CA), Senator Lyndon Johnson(D-TX), Senator George Smathers(D-FL), Senator Hubert Humphrey(D-MN), Mayor Sam Yorty(D-CA) all declare there candidacy for the Democratic Party nomination for the Presidency.

The Democratic Primaries of 1964
With numerous candidates in the race the Democratic party bosses would hope for some of the candidates being knocked out of the race in the first primaries, at which at the beginning of Primary Season there was no candidate as the front runner.

The Republican Primaries of 1964
Many Republicans thought it was an easy nomination the incumbent President Earl Warren and Vice President Nelson Rockefeller but after some time and thinking Senator Barry Goldwater would throw his hat into the ring and run as a "Real Conservative" in the primaries to have what Goldwater called a "Conservative Revolt" against the ruling New Deal Republicans of the GOP. Goldwater would come in late in the primary season, passing up several primaries and would be a weak candidate compared to Warren.

Illinois
1st-Earl Warren - 79%
2nd-Barry Goldwater - 16%
Other - 5%

New Jersey
1st-Earl Warren - 87%
2nd-Barry Goldwater - 10%

2nd-Barry Goldwater - 11%
Other - 1%

Oregon
1st-Earl Warren - 90%

After the complete loses in the primaries Barry Goldwater would drop his run for the nomination and remark in his usual bluntness "We would have lost even if Abraham Lincoln had come back and campaigned with us..".
