Given the farce this has become, wouldn't it have been nice had the Chancellor used his prerogative and not appointed Davis as Steward and Bailiff of the Three Hundreds of Chiltern?  Granted, a request for appointment hasn't been refused since the 19th century, but the situation would seem to have called for it.

As Nick Robinson (BBC Politics head) points out in his blog, this has happened before- in 1986, the whole Ulster Unionist party, at that time all 14 of NI's MPs, did this en masse in protest at the Anglo-Irish agreement.

Also happened in 1913 (IIRC) over votes for women. Labour guy did it, his party didn't approve and narrowly lost to a Tory.

The Democratic Unionists resigned in 1986, too. And IIRC the UUP actually lost one of their seats in the ensuing by-elections.

Indeed so, getting Seamus Mallon in. They also came quite close to losing Enoch Powell's seat.

None other than George Lansbury.

Oh and, apparently, the Staggers wants to find a candidate.

Funny. The English Democrats had said they wouldn't nominate a candidate.

A former Tory M.P (for the Vale of Glamorgan). Unless there's another Walter Edward Sweeney.
