I excluded Florida, because it would of course have won this in a landslide.

I vote North Carolina.

Tennessee and Arkansas are less Republican, but primarily because of Clinton/Gore.

I excluded WV because it was not in the Confederacy.

West Virginia didn't want to leave the union, so they seceded (Sp, I'm in a hurry) from Virginia, so they were never part of the Confederacy.

If you just count the old Confederacy, North Carolina is probably the best state. Arkansas may be a close contender.

Florida actually is extremely conservative in practice.

I would say Florida or, of the choices given, Arkansas.

'seceded' is the correct spelling

NC is out - Jesse Helms.

I put VA because of NoVa.

WVA was created illegally.

Illegally?  So the proponent of secession doesn't believe in secession for others?

Lincoln believed the southern states never seceded in the first place. So if you use his theory then the creation of WVA is unconstitutional according to the constitution.

Yes, but the Restored Government of Virginia approved the creation of WV.  They created the state of Kanawha out of the pro-Union, anti-slavery counties in the west and then renamed themselves West Virginia.

Yes, but the Restored Government of Virginia approved the creation of WV.  They created the state of Kanawha out of the pro-Union, anti-slavery counties in the west and then renamed themselves West Virginia.

The reason Virginia approved of the seperation was for this reason. After the war the Federal Government gave the state of Virginia two options in regard to the situation. Keep the western counties and remain one Virginia on the grounds that Virginia owed the federal government all its pre war and war debt. Or, allow WVA to be created and the debt would be split in half between the two states. Seeing as Virginia was in terrible shape for the next dozen years following the war logically Virginia chose the second option. The eastern panhandle was coerced by the federal government into becoming a part of WVA mainly because they feds threatened to punish Harpers Ferry and its county by cutting off the thriving B&O railroad. So you can argue many sides to the creation of WVA and be partially right I suppose.

It was originally created in 1863.  Maybe the post-war VA gov't was forced to accept this fact through various budgetary means, but WV became a state in time to vote in the 1864 election.

Then it was unconstitutionally created because Lincoln stated on several occassions that southern states never left the Union. And all 35 stars remained on regimental flags throughout the war. The whole problem is the federal government was forced into that belief because if they dared to say the south was not a part of the union they would be conceding a states right of secession. As a Libertarian you should be in sympathy with secession.

They never left; their governments did.

I believe in secession, where desired by the majority, and revolution, where justified and necessary.  I do not believe in secession to defend tyranny and slavery.

I'm surprised Arkansas is winning this poll--although Democrats are competitive in most of the state, Ark. does not really have pockets of social liberalism.

When voters in poor rural counties support liberal candidates it's more likely to be because of their economic populism. The economic issues really bring out a rural-based brand of economically liberal politics.

I think it's fair to say that Florida and Virginia would be among the LEAST[/i] liberal places in America on economic issues.

Oh the most liberal state in the south. There isn't a true liberal state in the south. Even FL is very conservative. I've lived here and know that the northern half of the state is just as conservative as Alabama. Overall it is the most liberal by presidential numbers, however, the Republican party is as productive as it is in Texas as far as the state level goes. The most liberal state in the south is still probably FL, but it's almost as conservative as Virginia, North Carolina, or Georgia.

"No state shall be created from a part of another state"

On a side note, why was the entrance of Maine into the union considered legally kosher?
