In 2000, Vice President Al Gore narrowly beats Governor George W. Bush.  He handles the 9/11 attacks well, but decides not to invade Iraq or Afghanistan.  In early 2003, he decides not to seek reelection, citing ill health.

Despite Vice President Lieberman trying to get the nomination, it goes to John Kerry of Massachusetts, who selects Senator John Edwards of North Carolina.

On the GOP side, Governor Bush wins the nominaton again, and picks Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania as his running mate.

Discuss with maps.

Not a chance Kerry wins the nomination under this scenario.  The decision not to invade Afghansitan would have been incredibly unpopular.  Bush and Ridge promise to fight terrorism and Bush re-ups his promise of "Compassionate Conservatism".  In the end, it proves an easy win.  Remember, so many people voted AGAINST BUSH and not FOR KERRY, so Kerry loses a lot of votes.  Result:

Ridge helps Bush because he is more likable than Cheney, but that's the only reason.

This scenario is unrealistic. I think Kerry would pull it off since a lot of moral voters will be unhappy with Ridge's pro-choice stance.

I disagree it's the independents who control the election. Conservatives would know that Kerry is pro-choice too. Plus Kerry would still out liberal Ridge.
