Why is that this region seems to be so much more conservative than the rest of the state?  It goes strongly GOP every 4 years, went strongly for Wallace in '68, and it was the strongest territory for the Democrats in the Solid South days.  Why is this?

Look at a national county map.  It's the Deep South.

The "panhandle" should really be part of Alabama

The "panhandle" should really be part of Alabama

Basically...and its the redneck Riviera of the south. Okaloosa County was on of Bush's strongest counties even though Escambia county [Pensacola, P-Cola Beach] has been slightly trending democrat [ish] lately. Clinton won the region overwhelmingly in the Prmary except for Escambia County since it has a higher black population than any other county in the region.

McCain will win it big because of the huge military presence there.

They already proposed this in 2000. It was going to be called Aderolf....but...it never pulled through unfortunatly :/

Perhaps Alabama will invade it? Is there any oil there? you know Bush is going to unemployed pretty soon. Perhaps he will get a chance to lead his beloved Alabama national guard.

Correct.  The Panhandle merely conforns with regional geography.  It's Southern Florida that's the aberration.

This is correct. Having lived there a little bit, I was always aware of how "northern" south florida was. it wasn't until spring break 2 years ago when i went to the panhandle (destin) for the first time...i couldn't believe it was the same state!!

Orlando (Orange County) used to be alot more conservative than it is now, heck even Dole was able to win Orange County. Tampa is a little more conservative. Volusia County is pretty Democratic.

They say if you live north of Orlando, you're not a "real" Floridian. Well with the exception of Broward, Palm Beach, and Dade, demographically it doesn't look any less conservative than the rest of the South. The people in Polk County (between Orlando and Tampa) and around Lake Okeechobee are just as redneck as rural Mississippi and alabama
