The first Neoconservative to run for president on the Democratic side.

He wasn't a Neoconservative, despite people who would later become Neoconservatives being associated with him.

How are you defining "Neoconservative", here?

Ever heard of Leo Strauss ?

There is no question Scoop Jackson was one of the first mainstream neoconservatives.
Oddly enough a democrat.

As for my Op on him... I can't say.

I ran across his name many times when doing research on the neoconservative philosophy.

I think Jackson's views certainly had a big influence on our modern day neo-cons, but they sadly abandoned his domestic views, leading to a twisted, horrible ideology.

His son is somewhat active in local politics. I wonder if there's any possibly he'll ever run for something?

I can't recall hearing any talk of him pursuing elected office. Last I heard he was Gregoire's speechwriter.

That's too bad.

I also want Reagan's son or the Nirvana drummer to run for something, just for entertainment value! Smiley

There's a reasonable chance on the Nirvana drummer. He's kind of pissed off the insiders though, so I don't think he'd be very successful. Washington voters have a niche for figuring out and then electing the type of people that piss of insiders though.

His foreign policy = 50,000 dead Americans and a couple million dead Vietnamese. No thanks.

I believe that was the policies of the Eisenhower/Kennedy/Johnson/Nixon Administrations which resulted in the deaths of more than 50,000 American soldiers during the course of American involvement in Vietnam, not directly Scoop Jackson. I'm not denying that the Whore of Boeing's continuous support of the War in Vietnam had an effect, but nowhere as near as the policies of the Eisenhower through to Nixon Administrations.

That's the biggest problem I have with him; although, Earl Warren never apologized either.

I am opposed to his foreign policy stance, his position on abortion and the Japanese-American internment.  However, he did a huge amount of good for Washington state.  In spite of his flaws he was one of the best senators our state has had.  In his heyday, he and Warren Magnuson ruled the senate chamber.

People seem to ignore Jackson's excellent record on enviromental affairs.  He wrote many of the landmark legislation, and was able to make sure it passed Congress.

Not I.  Jackson's work is a major reason that Washington developed a reputation as a green state.

Good.  Many Democrats, then and now, fail to appreciate his record on that issue.  He probably had a better record than many Democrats in Congress today.
