What is with people and Polk? He invaded another country to annex some land and is imperialist scum. We probably could have bought the land anyways without a war, if a more liberal minded government came to power in the 1850's with Mexico's debt being such a problem.

But he represents everything great about this country! You know...starting a war...conquering a nation...imposing a harsh peace...reneging on his campaign promise...having a bellicose campaign promise...

Nixon and Truman 100%

James K. Polk and Calvin Coolidge...two of the best.

Are you high?  Coolidge should be in the bottom ten.

I agree. He led the country through one of our worst wars (WWI is also underrated). His Fourteen Points were great, and the one that was most ignored (the League of Nations) could have been great if the US had decided to kick its sleepy self out of isolationism.

His face was going to be on Mt. Rushmore by the way, but Roosevelt got in the way. Not complaining, they were both pretty good.

Chester A. Arthur is sorely underrated.  He cleaned up government, modernized the Navy, and did it all in one term.  He doesn't get nearly enough credit.

James K. Polk and Chester A. Arthur are extremely underrated.

Coolidge was a horrible President. Anyone who looks at things like I do will likely agree.

Chester Arthur was a surprisingly decent president considering his background.

Polk often gets rated high, so I dont see him as underrated.

I've always seen him in the top 10, where exactly would you put him?

It put him in the bottom half, so I could understand that some people think he is underrated.

Edit:  Though I am surprised that 'State Rights' considers Andrew 'Secession is Treason' Jackson as underrated.

Jackson did what needed to be done to end the Indian wars in the east. It's sad that it had to happen that way, but really, random attacks and murder of families is unacceptable to allow to go unanswered.

So yours answer is to round up the families; destroy their homes, churches, etc; and force them to move?Huh?

Mostly no. The people did need to be moved from the region. It wasn't all lopsided whites murdering indians, their was a LOT of tit for tat going on. What other way, at that time period, would their have been?

Taft. I generally think he got an unfair deal. He had to be compared with roosevelt's personality, Even though he passed more reforms. And later he got the unfortunate pleasure of being stuck inbetween two great presidents. TR and Wilson. Sad, because growing up, Taft was one of my favorites.

Oh, I disagree.

Then how would you have proposed to end the Seminole wars in Florida and other white civilian massacres throughout the south? Using early 19th century methods.
