Obama voted for every attempt to de-fund the Iraq war and opposed the surge.

Factually incorrect.  Obama voted against the Kerry bill in 2006 (see either link below)

ok....

Obama voted for virtually every attempt to de-fund the Iraq war (including a 'slightly less sweeping version of Kerry's bill)

I stand corrected.

Also, even if Obama and Clinton are actually more hawkish that they claim to be their election will lead to a collapse in confidence in the region and be a big boost to AQI - making a withdrawal inevitable.

Would that AQI be the very Al-Qaeda that was NOT in Iraq prior to the invasion?

I wouldn't be surprised too see another eve of poll appearance from Osama Bin Laden, or some other leading Al-Qaeda figure, on behalf of McCain - just as they did for Bush in 2004. Still, I doubt he'll need it with the likes of the New York Times breaking their necks to do him a good turn

Unfortunately, the election was not decided on the economy or Iraq, it was more decided, according to exit polls, on moral values and terrorism. I don't see moral values having quite the same saliency moving through 2008. The GOP aren't exactly in a position to take the moral high ground any more. Too many scandals of late

This post, among others, pretty much states why an 'endorsement' of McCain now is untenable

A President McCain from 2001 to 2009, yes (if it had to be a Republican, better it have been him rather than His Ineptness); a President McCain now, eight years too late . Perhaps Iraq, all events been the same, might have taken a turn for the better, sooner rather than later
