If McCain were to become President, who with a realistic chance of being at the bottom of the winning ticket would be most acceptable to Democrats and independents?

There is no way McCain CAN do such a thing, even if he wanted to.

He has to pick Sanford, Pawlenty or someone similar.

IF he could choose such a person, well i would go with Ron Paul (he's an independent for me) or Bloomberg LOL

McCain might as well offer the nomination to one of hius "soulmates," i.e. Feingold, Kennedy or Kerry.

I thought the thread said "non-republican" choice?

Of course that will never happen.

I didn't realize the ambiguity of the thread title; with "non-Republican choice" I didn't mean a non-Republican on the ticket (which is not realistic), but rather whom non-Republicans would find most acceptable. I was expecting moderate Republicans as answers.

Oops, MY BAD! (hi walter).  Ridge would be my moderate choice.

OK, yeah, that's what I thought.

Well, speaking as a Democrat who wants to win the White House...I would love for Mac to choose Jim DeMint, Tom Coburn or Alan Keyes.  But he would never do that.

I'd love for him to choose someone who is tainted by scandal, like Haley Barbour -- who never did sufficiently answer the questions raised about him in the Mississippi Governor's race.

But speaking as a voter -- and one who, though liberal, really admires John McCain -- I would like him to choose Christine Todd Whitman, Olympia Snowe, Jim Douglas or Jim Leach.  Of course, that ain't gonna happen is it?

He's going to choose a conservative.  So among those folks, I can only hope he taps a mainstream paleo con like Mark Sanford rather than a Talibagelical like Tom Coburn or John Thune.

Coburn is quoted as having said:

"The gay community has infiltrated the very centers of power in every area across this country, and they wield extreme power... That agenda is the greatest threat to our freedom that we face today. Why do you think we see the rationalization for abortion and multiple sexual partners? That's a gay agenda."

That might not be disqualifying in OK, but do you honestly think that would fly on a national ticket?  Why would McCain ever take that kind of risk, placing Coburn on the ticket, when there are many other conservatives who would be far less controversial?

It seems obvious to me that McCain is not going to pick Coburn or DeMint, because they would be way too controversial.  I'm not sure why exactly they keep popping up on people's veep lists.

Mike Gravel, of course. Followed by McCain's resignation.

Mord,

I completely agree with you.  I was saying that as a Democrat who wants to win, I hope he chooses them.  You couldn't be more correct about how extreme and dangerous both men are.  Coburn favors capital punishment for abortion providers for cryin' out loud.

I was actually unaware that anyone had suggested them as serious contenders.

Senator Feingold could be a good non-Republican choice for McCain. I'd also say Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.

Ok, McCain would have to be into the nose candy if he was even THINKING for a split second about choosing Santorum (sorry, Phil).

Again, I meant the Vice President under McCain that is most acceptable to non-Republicans yet still realistic.

Not a chance.

Zell is a conservative and an honorable man.

So unlike McCain.
