If I recall rightly, Thompson was one of the first to leave the race last year on the Republicans' side, unless you consider people such as George Allen or Tom DeLay.

Well, what exactly did Thompson ever do of note, and could he ever have been more than a third-tier candidate?

He was essentially an obscure relic of the Bush administration. Thus, he never really had a chance in hell.

Nothing less than any of the other candidates: it was primarily an issue of the media making or breaking candidates. Tommy Thompson had more accomplishments than Fred Thompson or Rudy Giuliani and at least as many as Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and John McCain (unless you're concerned about length of tenure exclusively, but that's unfair to often-term-limited governors).

Thompson is credited with changing welfare when he was WI Governor.  At one time considered a real initiative Gov. 

Time has passed him by

..ideas on health care.

mainly bad ideas.  but at least he wasnt ignoring the issue like most republicans.
