Curious...whats this organization called Weather Underground? All I know is that its a weather forecasting website...I didnt know it was a radical leftist group in the 70s.

The Weathermen were an especially idiotic ultra-left fringe group in the late '60's and early '70's (broke away from SDS) that dabbled, and not very well, with terrorism. Pathetic rather than sinister.

And, more to the point, dissolved before Obama even graduated from high school.

Then I don't get how he could be connected to that group then?

I don't see why you think that making sense is a requirement for these rumors Tongue

Because some of the members were never decisively proven to have been involved in any bombings, so they never went to jail. A few ended up being significant members of the political machine in Chicago and eventually were introduced to Obama (for whom, as for all of us, the Weather Underground was a distant and fuzzy memory) as political figures.

I honestly wouldn't have a problem if Obama WAS directly connected to Weather Underground members. In Portugal there are members of Parliament who were former members of the leftist terrorist group Popular Forces of April 25. In Greece there are also ex-members of the November 17 Revolutionary Organization in Parliament. What's the problem?

Anyway anyone who wants to know more should watch the excellent documentary "The Weather Underground". And if you have Netflix you can stream it for free without even using a queue spot to rent it.

In Portugal, at least, this was in resistance to a fascist dictatorship. Not comparable. Not so knowledgeable about Greece, but I imagine those MPs are not all that popular among the wider population.

This isn't Portugal or Greece, and nor would most people want it to be.  And I'm truly not surprised that you'd have no problem with seeing a bunch of half-assed communist subversives in our government.

He isn't.  the right wing hate spewing machine saying so doesn't make it any more truthful than their lies about his religion.

Incorrect. Popular Forces of April 25 were active in the 80s, after the overthrow of the fascist dictatorship. In fact the "April 25" in their name refers to date of the overthrow of that regime. The situation is almost identical to Greece's in fact, resistance started against a fascist regime (In this case the November 17 refers to a major uprising against the regime), but was reorganized and continued after its fall.

Classic response from you, BRTD. "If I don't have a problem with something, why should anyone else?"

These claims are unsubstantiated and ridiculous. It's the work of better informed people to help those who would take these rumours and believe them ignorantly and correct them. If you want to help Obama's candidacy you should understand that if someone brought this up as a serious concern you'd do better to disprove the rumour than say "So what?"

But note that the IRA was a competent terrorist organisation.

And?

That's as relevant as the IRA being a competent terrorist organization (though I'd dispute even that, see Shankill Road bombing, they also failed to take out Maggie, to which I'll have no comment as to if that's a good or bad thing.)

No.

Comments related to this:

I would as it would be prove* that he's a patent idiot.

In any case, the IRA was certainly effective when it came to killing people and blowing things up (as were their various Loyalist counterparts). The Weathermen were a rather pathetic joke.

*Proof that I'm too tired to be doing this. Idiot that I am.

My worry with Obama is he is too big a man to fight fire with fire - yet he's going to have to, but, in doing so, needs to be careful not to undermine his very raison d'etre in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination

Much of what he stands, falsely, accused of, such as being a not only a Muslim but an Arab, seems to borne out of sheer ignorance and base prejudice. Anything that is decreed by Islamic Sharia Law is of no relevance in the United States and of no bearing on its citizens, it's as simple as that. That's the way I see it

Let's cut to the chase.  Obama's success in the general will be to mask his leftist agenda until AFTER the election.  If he can do that he will win.  If he can't he will lose.  That's the whole ballgame in a nutshell.

Jesus, how far will these idiots go to discredit Obama? Is this what an anti-Obama ad in the general will look like?

I doubt he could be that leftist. Like all successful leftists, my hunch is that a President Obama would be, pragmatically, center-left. It is possible to accomplish ideals that way

Ok, as left as he can politically get away with.  With both houses of congress in his hip pocket, I'd say that would be quite a lot.
