Does anyone have more information about these counties? The results seem to indicate that these counties are highly polarized.

There were also 21 Kerry/Huckabee counties in Arkansas, and 6 Kerry/Romney counties in Massachusetts, but I left them off due to the home state effect.

I wouldn't call any of the Romney examples polarized. I'm betting the CO and NV results are just Democratic leaning counties with a sizable Mormon population. As for Maine, it can be explained because Romney's superior organization always gave him wins in caucuses.

The Colorado ones are all either quite wealthy (Romney always won the rich vote) or have a relatively large Mormon population (but not large enough to overwhelm the local Democrats). The Maine ones can be explained by it being Maine, where only Romney seriously campaigned.

The Huckabee ones are probably mostly heavily black counties with large evangelical populations. That they're all in the South (except Wapello, IA, which sticks out) suggests this.

a lot of those virginia counties are coalfield counties with very low black population...a very low republican population also

That makes sense, too.
