Neither. Though my opinion of him has dropped this year it's still more positive than negative.

These are obviously ridiculous labels.

But Obama, other than lacking experience and -- how do I put this without Democrats jumping on me? I probably can't -- not being a patriotic person, just rubs me the wrong way. Having just listened to about an hour of the audiobook Audacity of Hope, he feels like a sardonic elitist who takes life as a cosmic joke. No, thank you.

Clearly not... i mean Obama doesnt put his hand over his heart when he says the pledge and i hear he's really a coke snorting, gay, muslim... how on earth could he be patriotic Wink

I just wish folks on the left and the right would stop trying to maintain that those on the opposite side must be not just wrong, but plain evil... it's killing the country frankly.

Obama and McCain are both patriots and good honest men, and that has not been the case in every election and for that at least we should be thankful and both should work to make the race fair and clean... but i doubt either will be able to restrain the partisans as much as they would like. Sad

Well said. Although I usually don't put my hand over my heart for the pladge (Isn't pledging alegiance to an inanimate object a form of idolatry?), and I am a Muslim. Tongue

So here are my thoughts on this.

Obama gratuitously bashed wearing a flag lapel.

Obama's wife is proud of her country for the first time in her adult life.

Obama was raised abroad. I know people who have grown up in multiple countries. Quite often, they lack firm national identities and become what one book I read calls "TCK's", Third Culture Kids.

Obama gives off a vibe that he's a "citizen of the world" and that he'll give the benefit of the doubt to other cultures'/nationalities' interpretation of the U.S. and other things. Not quite a blame-America-firster (I hope, though the Mrs. may be), but still extremely disturbing.

I'm sorry. The American president needs to be a proud American. With JFK, that was never in doubt. I'm not sold on this guy.

Frankly i think it bizzare to say you have to hold your hand over your heart, it's a choice and if somone doesnt then big deal you shouldnt feel compelled to do it that just devalues the whole thing and anyway how long has it been custom to put your hand to your heart during the pledge..? Fair play to those who do and fair play to those who dont feel the need to... it's not that big a deal IMHO.

It seems so many folks get obsessed with strange litmus issues rather than genuinly important issues that affect the country as a whole, the pledge, flag burning, school prayer, folks on both the left and the right could deal with focusing on issues of real importance... end of rant Smiley

1. The flag lapel pin is a stupid, meaningless gesture.
2. Huh
3. My parents weren't born in America. Why does that make me any less American? This is the sort of thinking that causes racism.
4. You mean he cares about what the world thinks? Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked That's terrible!

patriotism is the last refuge to which a scoundrel clings.

tell me honestly, WHY should one be PROUD to be an American?  And what exactly does it even mean?

does it mean that we as people are BETTER than people from other countries?

does it mean that we want the best for the country?

does it mean we love our country more than we love our family?

does it mean we love our country more than we feel affinity for our religion?

does it mean we will blindly support our leaders regardless of what they do?

honestly, i want to know.

I'm not one who subscribes to that sort of thing, but:

1. I hope not.
2. Yes.
3. I hope not.
4. I hope not.
5. I hope not.

That's just me.

he seems like a decent fellow and im sure he has good intentions.

however, i am not 'inspired' by him...nor do i think a president has to be or even should be 'inspiring'.  that is fantasy land type stuff.

my problem isnt with obama it is with his supporters and the media.  their obsession with him has gotten out of hand.  i fear it will be a hard fall from grace for obama when everyone suddenly realizes he is....human.

So here are my thoughts on this.

Obama gratuitously bashed wearing a flag lapel.

Well yeah, it's pretty pointless. Obama's point was that he'd rather display his patriotism through actions instead of what he wears.

How do you know what she's proud of?

Because spending a couple years abroad as a child makes you not be proud America, of course.

This is a good thing. We need to build our relationship with the rest of the world.

Though how does paying attention to other nations' opinion of us decrease Obama's patriotism? I don't see the point you're trying to make.

I see nothing here even mildly disturbing, let alone "extremely distrubing."

What, if anything, has Obama done that marks him as "unpatriotic"? I really don't know of anything and I don't really see where you're coming from at all.

Last week you were railing against him for (shock horror) taking a day off from the campaign.
