ive been thinking about this.

it seems rather simple to me...obama needs someone with experience, intelligence and a statesmen-like aura...who would be acceptable to the democrat base.

why not bill bradley?  has tons of experience.  definitely smart.  popular with the liberals.  now, he isnt mr. charisma...but obama's vp doesnt have to be.

acceptable

but Sen Bradley wasn't considered an expert on foreign policy.

 I'd go Biden as a 1st choice.

I still think Sherrod Brown would be an awesome VP choice.

both webb and biden are too much of a loose cannon to ever be seriously considered for the vp slot.

He needs a white male to run with him, because, unfortunately, this country isn't ready for TWO minorities on the same ticket (in this case, based on the history of the job, women are included as minority).  Joe Biden seems to be the best guy by far.  Russ Feingold wouldn't be too bad, either, IMHO.

Bradley wouldn't be a bad 2nd choice to Biden.

He left because he felt politics was broken.

Turned down the chance to replace Torrecelli before they offered it to Lautenberg, so he is not a party hack.

Yeah seriously, the Democrats would have been much better off had both Hillary & Obama decided not to run for President or got killed somehow.

I'm not saying it would be a good thing, but I can't imagine a scenario where both decide not to run without including a health issue.

another 1 term senator? um, no

Also no to Bradley: he's not fresh or relevent, plus he only appeals to the same demographic that Obama appeals to. Obama needs an experienced white male Christian governor from a southern or midwestern state near or over the age of 60. Mike Easley anyone?

Biden would be a good choice on paper: good foreign policy experience, a solid liberal but not an idologue, and i forget how many terms in the Senate. Unfortunately he's a gaffe machine with a huge mouth, and a plagiarist. He's ambitious too, and would be constantly trying to steal the spotlight. And probably the last thing Obama wants is a VP who spends half his time trying to figure out how to replace him.

Bill Nelson, maybe. What are Florida's guidelines for replacing a senator?

Remember, Obama and Webb are not even 1 term Senators in reality.  Obama is a 2/3 term senator and Webb is only a 1/3 term senator.  That only EQUALS 1 full term.

Obama is a risk himself with such little experience, no need to compound the risk.  I think Obama's lack of experience can be cancelled out by an experienced Governor.

I think the best Vice President for Obama would actually be Brad Henry.  That's not just favorite son bias, either.

my only concern about Henry is that he might be too conservative, plus Obama has NO chance of carrying Oklahoma, even with Henry on the ticket.

my only concern about Henry is that he might be too conservative, plus Obama has NO chance of carrying Oklahoma, even with Henry on the ticket.

Henry may not be able to turn it Democrat for Obama (Clinton is a completely different story), but he would force McCain to spend money here, which with most other Democratic VP's, he would not have to do.

Obama NEEDS a conservative Democrat on the ticket to make him appeal to the moderates and independents who, unlike primaries, actually decide the general election.

This country is not going to elect a very liberal ticket just like they would not elect a very conservative ticket.  They want more moderation.  Bush 43 was actually a moderate-conservative when he ran in 2000, but Dick Cheney was, despite having a lesbian daughter.  One of the reasons that Kerry lost is that he and Edwards were the #1 and #4 most liberal senators at the time.

I don't think Obama needs any help bringing over moderates and independents. Exit polls, as well head to head matchups against John McCain, show that Obama is already doing a great job at winning independents.

That actually isn't the worst pick in the world, mitty.  Some of the other choices made on this thread, however, are pretty funny.
