I voted for Agnew simply because he was such a foul crook that he never should have been vp, or even Md governor for that matter.  His resignation had nothing to do with anything he did as VP, at least so far as we know.  His crimes were committed earlier in his career and he got found out.  Thank God hed never was president.  Most of this probably fits for Burr, too.  If the VP is supposed to support the president, then several have done less than  adequate.  Dawes fell asleep at the wheel (or in his hotel room) and got off to a bad start with Coolidge.  Hamlin spent most of his time in Maine, and then was insulted when Lincoln snubbed him in 1864.  Taylor knew that Fillmore was going to vote against him if he ever had to break any tie Senate votes, and Tyler probably would have done that too.  One of the most important jobs the VP does is be ready to take over the presidency if the pres. dies, and in that respect, if Tyler didn't do anything else right, he performed a major service for our country.  When Harrison died, it hadn't yet been established that the vp would become a full president.  Many wanted him to be just an acting president until a real president could be selected, and they called Tyler "his accidency."  Tyler had the boldness to step up and take the position of full president, setting the precedent for ruture vps to follow.  Now if the president dies or resigns there is no question who will be president.  A similar system should be enacted for the house and senate.  If Sept 11 terrorists had crashed into the capitol and killed most or all of the senate, it could have been disasterous tying to figure out how to quickly reconvene the senat.  But I digress.
