Read the wiki entry here. Clinton thought she had this nomination in bag years ago, and played it cautiously, doing what she thought would be best for the general election.

Karl Rove pegged this race last year when he said no one who had the negatives that Hillary Clinton had at the start of a presidential campaign had been elected President.  It created this enormous vacuum for a likable candidate to defeat her, either in the primary or the general. Hillary only looked inevitable because people ignored her high negatives. Her campaign knew they had this problem from the outset. They had those odd introductory ads that looked like they were filmed in her Chappaqua living room and then the pick our campaign song bit with the Sopranos spoof at the end.  They were manufacturing likability and it came off as manufactured.  Hillary should have been viewed as very vulnerable long ago. 

So, Hillary never should have felt as confident as Dewey, if she actually did.
