With WAGOP in control, I was sure the map would look more like this...

Your eyes must be deceiving you; that's exactly what the map looks like.

Hopefully the WA GOP will dump this system next time. It does make it look well - bad.

Don't count on it.  If they did that, the WAGOP would no longer be in contention for the award of "most incompetent state Republican Party in the country", and that would not do.

Skamania is an intensely anti-establishment county, for reasons that have never been clear to me.

It's also the Libertarian Party's best county.

Hopefully someone will dump WA GOP.

That strikes me as a bit partisan in perspective. Smiley  Less is more, sometimes.

The WA GOP has done a fine job of dumping itself.

I'm assuming that this map is for the delegates elected to the state convention and not the preference poll, right?

Maybe the place is detached from the national economy. When money is not at stake, folks are unleashed. It may also be at once kind of down market rural tax haven, since one can still go to Oregon to buy stuff without paying a sales tax, while not paying an income tax in Washington. Just some odd little thoughts.

Yes.

Getting them to release something like that would be like pulling teeth.  They've been pretty uncooperative with me.

I called today for this very same information and they neglected to mention that it had already been released.  And I was talking with the person in charge of releasing it.

But I can give it a try if everyone wants.

It's a pretty diversified economy.  Tourism and construction are up there.  The dam at North Bonneville is an important local economic source.  Beyond that it's light industry, social services...your standard working-class rural Western county although probably with more unionization.  Unemployment is usually pretty high.

I'm not sure I'd say they're detached from the national economy...and the bridge there sucks and only goes to Cascade Locks, Oregon, which is not exactly a shopping mecca.  I think there's a lot more of that in Clark County than Skamania.

But interesting thoughts.

I've been there, and while I can say it's one of the most beautiful places I've been, I can't testify much to its politics.  It's almost non-descript.

Combined uncommitted + other + Paul (just for fun):

Ferry - 68%
Skamania - 64%
Spokane - 56% (!)
Klickitat - 55%
Okanogan - 54%
Pend Oreille - 48%
Grant - 45%
Stevens - 44%
Clark - 42%
Pacific - 41%
...
Mason - 22%
Skagit, Wahkiakum - 21%
Douglas - 11%
Garfield - 0%

Says less than it used to, now that anyone but McCain is effectively a potential protest candidate
