Only 2 days apart? I remember there being a couple weeks between the conventions in 2004.

Also, I hope that having the convention in September doesn't turn the Republican convention into another 9/11 festival, a la 2004. But my hope it probably futile.

Do we know if they've both decided on Keynote Speakers? Or will they do that at a later date?

Who gets to speak and when they get to speak will all be decided by the campaign team of the presumptive nominee (and presumably they won't decide that until several months from now), which is why it gets interesting if we're faced with the unlikely scenario of not knowing who the nominee is before the convention.

Also, if the Dem. convention actually goes all the way until Aug. 29, which is a Friday, will anything of importance happen that day?  The normal schedule is that the convention runs from Monday-Thursday, w/ the nominee giving the acceptance speech on Thursday.  Doing that on Friday makes little sense, since there are fewer people at home watching TV on Friday.

That's about 45 days to the election give or take.  This is exactly why there will not be a brokered convention or fight.

That's too short of a time to heal a breach within the party then focus the attack on McCain.

It will be nasty.

Dems didn't schedule it earlier this year in order to avoid the Olympics IIRC.  Dems had their convention in late July of 2004 and GOP in late August.

Part of the reason for the GOP going so late in 2004 was to take advantage of campaign finance laws, and the fact that running for the nomination & running in the GE are treated as sort of like separate elections as far as fundraising and public matching funds are concerned.  I presume that's why both parties are going so late again this year.

What are dates of Republican and Democratic Conventions?

All that and more can be found here:   http://www.thegreenpapers.com/P08/

(scroll down about six-sevenths of the page to find the dates of the conventions of the eleven or so major parties)

Excellent website.  I actually discovered that one before I came across Liep's US Election Atlas.
