Finally getting around to this since the vote on Super Tuesday:
Partisan Results:
Republican turnout was actually strong, almost twice what it was in 2000, but was completely overwhelmed by Democratic turnout. Normally Shelby Co. is about a 58-42 place in federal elections, but this primary ended up 67-33 in the partisan turnout percentages.
Democratic Primary
Obama easily won the county, but Hillary did well in East Memphis, Bartlett, and Millington. African-americans dominate the Democratic primary numbers here, usually 80-85% of the voters. I'd imagine a few more whites showed up for this election, but there are white majority precincts where blacks make up a majority of the Democratic primary vote in that area (see Morning Sun, the large precinct in the center-east part of the county). Whites for Obama did seem to rule the Midtown and East Memphis area.
Republican Primary
McCain won East Memphis and Midtown (affluent and moderate) Romney won Germantown (affluent and conservative) Huckabee won Millington (non-affluent and conservative), Lakeland, Cordova, and Collierville. (affluent and evangelical)
Keep in mind that very few GOP votes are cast in the western and southern areas of the county so the candidate #'s are all over the place.
