As you can see form the article, the social manifestation of this (rather useful) term has changed over time, but what has been constant about it is its use, from time to time, and from certain groups, as a defensive mechanism against orthodoxy. That is the definition that I first proposed to Willy, and is I think the one that most closely captures what the phrase stands for.
In recent years however, it has become increasingly misappropriated by the right, to the extent that for many of them it now means nothing more than, in his words, "extreme liberalism". Which is why I would say that they can't have it both ways: either it retains its original meaning, in which case it can be employed against
any orthodoxy, or it becomes just another conservative slogan, and loses its original meaning altogether.
