Anyone else happy this map looks a lot like a general election one with Clinton as the Republican candidate?

I love it. Smiley

BRTD has a map of Minnesota in his sig and no map of Missouri to illustrate his point in this thread. Hence, the confusion.

BUT BRTD is right, the Missouri map does look like Obama is the Democrat and Clinton is the Republican. (Although, in a general election, that map would be a "Republican" victory; it's a "Democratic" victory because there are so few Democrats in rural Missouri.)

At first it does look like that, but it's really only a superficial similarity.

% vote for Kerry (General)...

% vote for Obama...

The Missouri vote counting even looked like a traditional close Republican-Democrat race, with Clinton starting out with a huge lead, only for that lead to crumble once St. Louis started coming in, until the Democrat pulls ahead on the last couple percentage points of reporting.

Only because it reflected urban/rural divisions.

No, we're talking counties where fewer than 1,000 votes were cast in the Democratic primary, for the most part. There are a handful of Democrats everywhere.

So much for the "Obama does well in Republican areas during the primaries" argument.

There are dozens of reasons why that is a lame argument, and this is one of the least convincing.

Moreso Clinton does very poorly.

When we get outside of the caucus dynamic and into the primary dynamic, so far we've only had four western states with rural western Republican areas that have voted so far (Oklahoma, Arizona, Calfornia and Utah).

I suggest looking at those results in the relevant counties to get a feel for what's really going on...
