NewsChannel 4: N.J. Governor McGreevey To Resign

POSTED: 2:42 pm EDT August 12, 2004
UPDATED: 2:46 pm EDT August 12, 2004

NEW YORK -- NewsChannel 4 has learned that  is planning on steping down from office after more than 2 years of service.

McGreevey, a former prosecutor, came into office vowing to end corruption, but in recent months, a number of his political aides and fundraisers have been accused of corruption ranging from alleged payoffs to hiring a prostitute.

McGreevey has not been accused of any wrongdoing, and has denied any wrongdoing in the past.

Should McGreevey indeed leave office, his successor, under the state constitution, would be Richard Codey, the current president of the state senate.

-------------------------------------

The talk is that he will resign the day after the election because a special election could be held this Nov. 2nd.  And I heard this has to do with  homosexual sexual harassment. Jim is gay.

EDIT: Golan Cipel, Jim's lover and former advisor, was going to extort money from him-- over the sexual misconduct and his "gay-ness" I guess.

Turn on CNN. They will be covering his speech and we'll find out what's going on. Its a safe bet to say he's resigning but what reason will HE give?

Because of his gay lover filling a suit against him.

I think it has to do with the corruption scandals that have plagued his administration for quite some time.

I really did think this had to do with the corruption scandal. I can't believe this.

There will be NO special election. Codey will be Governor until the term ends in 2006.

Note that the election will be held in Novemeber 2005...so Codey will only be in office for one year.

It also seems like there would be time for McGreevey to retract his resignation if the voter rush to his defense.

That won't happen. McGreevey is very unpopular.

Why should they demand an immediate resignation?
McGreevey didn't have to resign...he didn't break any laws.

Many believe he is a total failure as Governor and it has nothing to do with this gay affair.

OK...but that isn't any reason to resign.  There are lots of unpopular politicians.  Our political system deals with them by electing someone else at the appropriate time.
Being forced to resign should be reserved for those who break the law.

Giving his lover a high security job he wasn't qualified for as a gift is against the law.

I should have been more specific. There have been a few scandals that have involved members of his administration.
