wow. Very interesting. And we all know what happens in NJ when a Governor steps down, 5 other people become Governor in the same week or something like that.

No, the Senate President becomes Acting Governor. It was complicated when Whitman resigned because during that time, Don DiFrancesco's term as Senator ended before the Gubernatorial term was up.

Dick Codey will be Acting Governor until November 2, when a special election will be held and the new Governor will take office that day.

I don't know what this means for a 2005 Republican victory but I do know this...whoever takes over (Codey in this case) will be a HUGE improvement.

Why should he resign over this?  I mean, homosexuality is one thing - it doesn't stop Barney Frank from being elected every 2 years to the House.  Having an affair is also one thing - Bill Clinton and a host of others have done it.  This just combines the two.  What's the big deal?

It's more than that, in my opinion. He's been a total failure as Governor and there were a few scandals (outside of this gay affair) that involved members of his administration.

He can't be too bad if he has enough dignity to resign. What many people overlook in history is that Richard Nixon had the dignity to resign when he was in trouble, Clinton did not. I salute this man for seeing that it would better serve New Jersey for him to step down.

There won't be a special election.  His resignation isn't immediate but instead won't be until later (Nov. 15 IIRC) specifically to avoid having a special election.

His lover was given a $110K job as the Governor's top security adviser. Then he tried to extort millions from McGreevey to keep their affair secret.

That's why he resigned.

Now that I know more about this, I can see why he's resigning.  Holy corruption, Batman!

I look at this on two levels. I am outraged at the corruption, and I am personally happy for the governor.

When I saw him on television, he looked so placid and relieved. The burden he must have bore was excruciating, and to be free of that is something everyone deserves. But I am also disgusted that someone would select a state director of Homeland Security on the basis of having an affair with them. Being gay and having an affair are nothing to resign over. Those are personal matters that have no bearing on your performance in office. But the rest of it was quite another.

I think that McGreevey has pulled a "clinton" here.

He was running an extremely corrupt administration, which a great amount of skullduggery that was probably going to be discovered.  His affair with his (unqualified) Homeland Security Director is only the tip of the iceberg.  There may be some things for which he could be prosecuted.

By resigning the way he did, he shifts the focus from his other crimes to his sexual orientation, and makes it more difficult to go after him for his other activities.
