I was just looking at the primary results for that year and that question came to mind.  I don't remember that much about the circumstances.

It also seems like kinda an odd match-up in terms of state/candidate.

I'm racking my brain but I can't remember any specific reasons, other than the fact that he had a lot of money to spend on the campaign and he was attracting a lot of attention in the press at the time for his tax proposals.

He spent a ton of money, McCain didn't run in Iowa, and Forbes was perceived as the conservative candidate there against the more moderate Bush. His failure to win Iowa basically ended his campaign.

I remember that part, but I was under the impression that he'd just dumped a ****load of money into the state.

I recall reading that it was because he dumped loads and loads of cash into Iowa, so much so that his loss there ended any real chance he had at getting the nod.

Right, he was championing a flat tax, and received a lot of attention because of it.
