ive always wondered why so many democrats ran for president in 72?

wasnt nixon in a strong position?

He didn't look nearly as strong in late '71 and early '72 as he did later, and all those candidates got into the race back then. You could also argue that his strength may have caused more of them to run, since it kept some of the prospective front-runners out and raised hopes that a long shot could win the nomination (which indeed happened).

the only front runner that sat out was ted kennedy.

There were some others who were speculated about as prospective candidates who didn't run-- none with Kennedy's star power, though.
