Totally not plausible but lets see how this plays out.

1. Bill Clinton declines to run for a second term for whatever reason.

2. Jimmy Carter challenges Al Gore for the Democratic nomination. Carter wins it and selects his former VP Walter Mondale as his running mate again.

3. Meanwhile, George H.W. Bush, runs uncontested for the Republican nomination and despite some Republican objections, selects his former VP Dan Quayle as his running mate.

Thus the tickets that were defeated for reelection in 1980 and 1992 are now at it again.

There is no third party challenges by either Perot or Nader.

How does this pan out?

I would mostly agree with that map, but I'd give Iowa and West Virginia to Carter, and Jersey to Bush.

George Bush/Dan Quayle (R): 370 EV, 53%
Jimmy Carter/Walter Mondale (D): 168 EV, 47%

Total opposite of the RL 1996 EV totals.

Interesting scenario CPT Mikey.

This election returns Bush and Quayle to power.

Under no circumstances would the nation want a return to the incompetence of the Carter years.

Interestingly enough, both Bush and Carter would be 72 years old at this time.

Bush/Quayle                307
Carter/Mondale            231

I think there's a clear consensus here.

Thank God!

Bush: 367
Carter: 171

Note: I don't even buy Carter winning his home state.

BTW: Winfield - check your math!

I have no doubt Bush would have won  the election.

I gave Georgia to Carter because the state may have gone for Carter for sentimental reasons, one last hurrah for their most famous native son.

Right, my numbers 307/231.

Actually, I like your map, CPT, but I give Georgia to Carter for reasons stated above.
