I did a rough map of Toronto, which has some similarities to American cities. Yellow is Chinese, not Asian.

Chinese ARE Asian, my friend.

I think he meant all Chineese, where other Chineese regions were based on a compilation of all Asian ethnicities.

Pretty sure Chinatown in NYC is pretty much all Chinese.

I believe he meant that those tracts (or whatever Canadians call them) are more specifically majority Chinese, not just majority Asian. From what I recall from browsing the Canadian Census website, they don't group together Chinese, Japenese, Indians, Koreans, and what not as "Asian" like the U.S. census does, but merely leave them each separate as their own minority group.

For example, a tract that was 45% Chinese and 10% Indian may be at least 55% Asian, but on his map it would show up as no majority. On his map a tract must be at least >50% of a specific Asian ethnicity to show up, and in this case it appears that there are only a few places like this. If he weren't so lazy, though, he could add up the different Asian groups!

Are Indians normally in the Asian category?  I consider Asian more Oriental, so the Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, etc...

I think it depends.

In Britain, I think people from India and Pakistan are considered to be "Asian" as distinct from "Chinese"; while in the US, people from the Orient are considered "Asian" while those from India are considered "Indian".  This probably has something to do with where the most Asians came from.  With more people from India and SE Asia coming to the US, they are probably thought more as being Asian as well.

The 2000 Census Form had a cluster of boxes for Asian Indian, Chinese, Filipiono, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, or Other Asian, which they aggregate as "Asian" for race classification.

Similarly, they have a cluster of boxes for Native Hawaiian, Guamanian or Chamorro, Samoan, or Other Pacific Islander, which they aggregate as "Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander".  Before 2000, the two together were classified as "Asian or Pacific Islander".

Other races recognized by the Census Bureau are White; Black or African American; American Indian and Alaska Native; and Some other race.

Okay, I just added some more... I did Orange County, Philadelphia, Seattle, Minneapolis, and El Paso.

I'm planning on doing to the Bay Area next, followed by the other cities in Texas, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Boston, and DC (not in any particular order).

Better not be skimping over the Bay Area buddy....

In all seriousness great job. And even in a more abstract form the layout of LA County still disgusts me.

Oh, and Chicago looks like Florida, and the OC looks like Washington DC.

You never wondered why Bush didn't win whites out northwest despite the smallish overall margins?

I think (?) that little green enclave in Detroit surrounded by blue on all sides is Arab.

It's not even Detroit, it's a small city called Hamtramck, which is indeed largely Arab. There was some debate over whether public loudspeakers could be used to broadcast Islamic prayer throughout the city.

Did you guys really not know how white Seattle was? I mean its much more diverse than its surrounding areas but that's not saying much. It's like California but with way less hispanics and slightly less Asians and Blacks. Also the neighborhoods seem to be pretty integrated up there so the chances of a majority Asian or Black precinct occurring is small.
