It's about to start. Cardinal Re (who won't vote) already read his homily.

Obviously, I can't spoil the ending, but if that 'pills' a few Cardinals that would be something.

Woelki said that he enjoyed the movie and his main criticism was that the atmosphere seemed more like a general congregation rather than the conclave itself, and this is a conservative (for a German bishop in Current Year) who's been a cardinal since 2012.

If we're doing predictions, I guess put me down for Tagle. I think he at least has the initial advantage.

I can't see the first Filipino pope going with Francis as a papal name. It'll either be something highly traditional (John or Paul) or Lorenzo to signify the homeland.

If true, it confirms a good deal of things we have been suspecting, that the fact these guys have never played the game before is driving events. The rumor mill has been in full swing for certain candidates because they can't control their front. Why certain groups think public pressure or social media can actually influence decisions. Why an American may have a non-zero chance.

The stormy weather around Parolin also looks even worse now because it implies that his path involved name recognition and "I mean he was Francis's on-paper Number One, so..." default support from the kinds of peripheries cardinals who, Just Like Benitez In The Movie Conclave Which Is About A Papal Conclave You Know, have been signaling for the past few days that they find the Curial/"central" Roman atmosphere disillusioning and upsetting.

Not doing a firm prediction but I think the conclave will go a bit faster than most cardinals expect, and have a better outcome than the side of me that thinks every sound my car makes is a head gasket exploding (even though I don't currently drive a pre-2010 Subaru) fears.

In 2005, some pundits said "After 26 years of a Polish pope, the Italians won't allow a non-Italian". In 2013, some pundits said "After 26 years of a Polish pope and 8 years of a German pope, the Italians won't allow a non-Italian".
To be fair, Pope Francis was Italian. He was just born in Argentina.

We usually hear that Francis was the "first non European pope in 1300 years". We could say just that Francis was the "first non European pope". The other non European popes came from the Middle East and North Africa, which were part of the Roman world, and so, we could say that they were part of the European world.

But since Bergoglio has close Italian ancestry and Italy recognizes nationality by blood, we could say that he was Italian, and so, European. But as far as I know, he didn't have Italian passport.

Bergoglio may be white, but Buenos Ayres isn't 'lily white'.

Gonna predict right now that it’ll just be Tagle. Not gonna even try to guess what name he’ll take.

I'll be "bold" and say that despite the chatter and the recent turn against him Parolin was a frontrunner for a reason and wins it on the 2nd day. He checks so many boxes for so many different groups or factions that it is difficult to come up with good objections against the man himself. I also think the advantage of being the Secretary of State is hard to quantify but too important to ignore; a lot of these cardinals will know Parolin better than they know most of their other colleagues and might be willing to give him more of the benefit of the doubt than they would relative strangers.

I see at some point they fixed the detail in this that Tremblay is the *dean* and not the camerlengo, as it originally stated.

I know in the novel Tremblay is explicitly identified as the camerlengo, and it feels at least implied that he is in the film, given that he's the one who makes the formal sede vacante declaration.

Awww, a few cardinals are craning their necks to look at the ceiling. I'd do the same.

I love how some Cardinals (such as Dolan) forget they're supposed to say their first name in Latin.

Pretty sure Sarah did this too. Pretty funny, given their stances…

To be fair to Dolan, he's not much of a Latin Mass guy. He's what used to be called a "JP2 conservative" or "neoconservative" cardinal, just one of the more repellent ones.

The YouTube chat is revealing a LOT about e-trad priorities. Every time a black cardinal comes up and swears the oath they start talking about Sarah.

Gregory has a pronounced Midwestern accent even in Latin.

Online trad Caths remain entirely in it for extra-theological and aesthetic reasons. (I’m sympathetic to the latter.)

In this case it's more the obvious racial profiling that gets to me than anything else.

Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla obviously struggling with the Latin is kind of touching. Francis really did pull these guys from the ends of the earth.

Roche's Latin is quite good for the architect of the Latin Mass restrictions.
