Due to a family emergency, I had to fly into San Francisco the day after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. The airport was closed for a time, lots of flights were canceled, and many people canceled their bookings. I had to fly to Memphis and change to a flight to SFO. It was a large plane and there were maybe eight other passengers aboard. But that worked out OK, as I'd had to wake up in the wee hours to make the flights, so I lifted up all the seat arms on a row in the center section and laid down to sleep.
