Trump's populism is animated in large part by chest-beating emotionality, what his supporters imagine being righteous indignation. That's not just some variation of "orange man bad", either. I'm sure his supporters would be the first to say that the appearance of toughness is something they value strongly. To some extent, it's valid frustration with the "there is no alternative" technocratic post-politics of neoliberalism, the kind of milieu from which we get "just learn to code" or unashamed denial of the existence of the cost of living crisis. It's just that going around acting hysterical isn't the solution.
