Gavin Newsom: Trans athletes playing in women’s sports ‘deeply unfair’

The governor announced the new podcast venture last month, promising frank conversations with some of the “biggest leaders and architects in the MAGA movement.” The first episode, which aired Thursday, saw Newsom engage in a friendly back-and-forth with Kirk, at one point asking him what advice he had for the Democratic Party.

“Get better ideas, governor,” Kirk responded. “You, right now, should come out and be like, ‘You know what? The young man who’s about to win the state championship in the long jump in female sports — that shouldn’t happen.’ You, as the governor, should step out and say, ‘No.’”

Kirk was referencing a transgender high school student’s victory in a girls’ triple jump event in California last month. He pressed Newsom to speak out against the student’s participation.

“I think it’s an issue of fairness; I completely agree with you on that,” Newsom said. “It’s an issue of fairness. It’s deeply unfair.”

I'm glad Democrats are finally started to point out how unfair trans women playing women sports is. I still think Newsom is a terrible choice for 2028 because California is viewed negatively by the rest of the nation.

Hope more Democrats do the same. And hopefully, California changes their laws.

There's really nothing to say that we all haven't said repeatedly on a bunch of threads, but Democrats are 40 or more points underwater on this issue which is extremely important to millions of Americans (even though most of those don't actually care about women's sports).

Over the last couple months, I've started suspecting this issue single handedly cost Harris the 2024 election, which is incredibly frustrating given that she never even campaigned on it. I don't think the typical red avatar poster here really grasps how fervent and adamant the 70% of Americans who agree with Newsom are.

I don't think its a major problem, more like an issue that needs to be put away with some compromise bill. Like not allowing trans women who went through male puberty but allowing those who didn't go through male puberty.

Regardless how serious of an issue it actually is, it is considered a big deal to millions of Americans. Yes, even swing voters. So Democrats need to fight the narrative they are ok destroying women sports, even if they think its a non-problem.

You may be right. I will never vote for him, and my opinion of him was low enough this does not change it, but winery and all, he might go somewhere in a devastated post-Trump US where the America First types cling to Trump and the billionaires who didn't go all in on the looting want someone to make sure they their money can still be spent. Just a reminder that, when Charlie Kirk was asked about increased LGBT suicide rates as a result of anti-LGBT legislation and rhetoric, he said they needed to "toughen up"... and said "anti-Christian discrimination" was worse.

I get wanting to punt this particular part of The Transgender Question™, but, like, HRT is pretty damn effective, even if the Cis like to pretend otherwise. For a lot of Republicans yes, they do want to go that far. But there are also millions of Americans who may have voted for Obama or Clinton who voted Trump in 2024 with this being one of their top issues, who only want to ban them from sports but not go down that road.

And yet thanks to their votes for Trump, we are headed down that road. I would rather ask 40 high schoolers to "take one for the team" and let their athletic dreams go in order to preserve the country for all LGBT Americans, and really all Americans as a whole. Given the state of our country today, I wish Biden and Harris had asked that of them.
