This is a problem because of what, exactly?

The institution of the Caliphate was separated from actual genuine political power during the reign of the later Abbasids, and further reinforced as a temporal figurehead during the Abbasid exile in Egypt under the Mamluks after the Mongol annihilation of their realm in Iraq.

It wasn't until much later under the reign of the later Ottoman Sultans, particularly Abdulhamid II, that the position of the being the the rightful Caliphs of Islam, well Sunni Islam, was actually being wielded for political purposes to bolster Ottoman international prestige and internal cohesion amongst their Muslim subjects. And even with Mehmed V's declaration of jihad in 1915, the last legitimate call for jihad, the Sultan-Caliph's power was all but relegated to being merely a puppet figurehead under the C.U.P. dictatorship while the call for jihad against the Entente basically went unheeded outside the empire itself.

And with the Ottoman defeat, partition, and downfall, following the Great War. Resulting with Mehmed VI being deposed, Abdulmejid II being instated as the final Ottoman Caliph, his own later deposition by the Kemalists, and the brief attempt by the Hashemite Sharif to claim the mantle for his own self. The institution of the Caliphate was basically relegated to being merely temporal figureheads, akin to the Papacy.

So all the fear-mongering about the future restoration of this institution isn't about fears about extremism or whatever. No, it's about keeping Muslims down, and divided. And even if it were to be restored, it wouldn't be something of one, continuous, sprawling state akin to the Umayyads waging campaigns of conquest to restore al-Andalus or whatever.

I sympathize with all the people in the Middle East, especially most of all the innocent children that didn't ask to be brought into these wars.

As for the people in power in these countries, I don't know enough to say but they all sound dominated by a fundamentalist ideology.

I can't ever see a peaceful Middle East without first people learning to coexist with each other's religious and cultural ways of life - and maybe that's the problem, that it's not realistic for that to happen.

I’m not sure what Arafat was but I think your description is wrong, he was no Trump-style conman, but neither was he some kind of Mandela or MLK type liberator. He was a revolutionary who if he had won would have turned into just another dictator, a more competent Mugabe.
