WOOO-HOOO!
First DeSantis shuts down Disney which forced Nate Silver to leave 538.

I loved the Governor for this.

Now ABC is forced to shut down 538 because of the Trump DOGE Govtm layoffs.

We don't need Galen, Morris and these Data Humps who got it all wrong time and time again and never admit their mistakes. Too much left wing propaganda was thrown into the Public by 538 during the 2022 & 2024 Elections.

edit: And given how successful Scott Tranter and DDHQ were in projecting States during E-Night 2024 I think 538 was bascially made redundant.

Now how this became about Desantis. I have no idea.

Who is this?

Lakshya Jain is the 90s-kid/Millennial tech bro co-founder of Split Ticket: https://split-ticket.org/about-us/

He was a guest on the 538 podcast last year

YouTube transcript for this 538 podcast episode I listened to during my commute

Quote
There is a simple math issue here at play for Republicans- unless you start making sizable gains with a group of very very socially liberal voters, the problem you run into is that no one lives forever and gen Z is not any more conservative than Millennials really were.

Sure they can be more disaffected; you can say that they're a little bit more likely to prioritize economic issues maybe than social issues. But right now that generation still is backing Democrats in the average of polls too, by more than John Kerry won young voters by against George Bush.

So yes gen Z is different in a way that every generation is different. What's more interesting here for me is that they're as close to a continuation of Millennials politically as you can get from another new generation, in ways that did not exist previously. That's my take.

so the second Trump's approval goes underwater on their tracker, ABC announces they're getting rid of the site?? If I was a conspiracy theorist, I'd say this sounds fishy

It’s just ruling class solidarity with Trump and Musk.

Trump voters have been scammed so f—king hard it’s kind of sad.

Those of you who think ABC/Disney shut down 538 just because Trump's approval went negative are just as bad as any of the right-wing conspiracy theorists out there.

538 has the best system for polling averages, even if it's a little bit flawed. Still miles better than the RCP slop.

It's pretty incredulous that ABC bought the outlet, gutted it, and then now is just flat out cancelling it altogether.

The familiar story of a Multinational buying a smaller business.

Microsoft and Skype.
NewsCorp and MySpace.

And the list goes on.

The only winner was Silver who sold it at it's peak, perhaps he thought it "as good as it gets" and sold.

However 538's reputation rose and fell along with scientific accuracy.
Crappy polls-> crappy polling averages-> crappy commentary on polling averages.

Those of you who think ABC/Disney shut down 538 just because Trump's approval went negative are just as bad as any of the right-wing conspiracy theorists out there.

Within the past few months, we've seen Trump threaten one of the country's most highly regarded pollsters with legal action and use regulatory intimidation and legal action against CBS's parent company to force the country's longest running news magazine program into releasing raw footage of his electoral opponent.

All of this happened after he won the election. The point wasn't to influence the result or to cow his electoral opponent. The point was to intimidate the media and the organizations that own the newsrooms.

538 was an underperforming unit of an organization facing structural problems and adverse economic headwinds, so there's more to the story, but there is no question in my mind that the business of polling and poll aggregation has become more trouble than it is worth in large part because of Donald Trump.

Complying in advance with Trump's Orbanite project.

Quote
'There is a Party slogan dealing with the control of the past,' he said. 'Repeat it, if you please.'

"Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past," repeated Winston obediently.

"Who controls the present controls the past," said O'Brien, nodding his head with slow approval. 'Is it your opinion, Winston, that the past has real existence?'

Again the feeling of helplessness descended upon Winston. His eyes flitted towards the dial. He not only did not know whether 'yes' or 'no' was the answer that would save him from pain; he did not even know which answer he believed to be the true one.

O'Brien smiled faintly. 'You are no metaphysician, Winston,' he said. 'Until this moment you had never considered what is meant by existence. I will put it more precisely. Does the past exist concretely, in space? Is there somewhere or other a place, a world of solid objects, where the past is still happening?'

'No.'

'Then where does the past exist, if at all?'

'In records. It is written down.'

'In records. And- ?'

'In the mind. In human memories.

'In memory. Very well, then. We, the Party, control all records, and we control all memories. Then we control the past, do we not?'

After listening to an episode of their podcast it’s no wonder. They clearly think they’re a lot smarter than they are, plus the nasally voices make you want to drink bleach.

It's worth noting that the pre-2023 articles which were published on fivethirtyeight.com, away from the ABC News walled garden, are still available - such as this excellent article about Ann Selzer and her legacy. (Do not use the links in the top bar to find old articles; instead, use the search engine.)

projects.fivethirtyeight.com is completely nuked; most of their article output is still up.

If it were just the election models that would be one thing, but they had many other useful projects which won't have been archived elsewhere. This data wipe goes beyond the election stuff.
