Have you had a falling out or animosity with a family member, friend or loved one due to differing views on Trump, MAGA, the two parties or other political issues?

In my family, my dad, my brother and I are vehemently opposed to Trump and the GOP, while my mom supports a lot of his policies. As the three of us move left, she is moving right, and it's creating friction.

A similar dynamic is playing out in my extended family as well.

Maybe this should be in the "forum community" thread, but I wanted to see how common this is since Trump came back into office.

I don't have any Trump supporters in my family. I have Trump curious friends who agree with some of his policies and that's fine with me. We have other things in common. Not sure I could be close with an ultra MAGA type though.

That's where I am. I draw my line at social media posts and whatnot. Otherwise I can be friends with anyone regardless.

No they haven’t at all . I know people who are extremely MAGA and those who despise Trump at the same level posters like crane do but they still get along really well and I get along with both well . We can debate politics but then get along well afterwards .

I think a large part of this though is that supporting Trump these days is far far more normal among the people I know  than it was in 2016. In 2016 over 90% of people I knew backed Hillary over Trump and now the same group of people were overwhelmingly for Trump in 2024 .

So the vast majority of people in my circle know what it’s like to be on both sides of the political debate or know people who have been so it makes things far less personal

Not really.

However, I do have some heated discussions with my Dad since his foreign policy views greatly differ from mine.

Don't know any Trump supporters outside of some of my extended family, but I don't talk to them anyway, so it doesn't affect me.

Current people are grandfathered in, but I could never form a new relationship with a Trumper. I just never, ever talk politics with the ones I have now.

Yes. I’ve lost both of my parents and sister to MAGA over the past decade and it’s been a painful journey. 2024 was the turning point and I’ve limited my contact with them since November.

My friends are mostly indifferent to politics, which has both upsides and downsides. They're critical of everything, which can be refreshing, but can also lead to some reductive both-siderisms.

My family are mostly registered Democrats, so the people on this forum are familiar with all their sentiments. I've never supported Trump, but during 1.0 I was much more willing to push back against takes that I felt were dramatic or ridiculous, not even in Trump's defense but in like a "he's too incompetent to pull it off" sort of way. I guess this made me the most "conservative" member of the family, or maybe it was because I was willing to mock the Democrats frequently too. It didn't usually cause any real tension because we're loud and argumentative people, but I did feel like the odd man out at times.

This time around though I mostly just nod along, because I can't really say, "Oh, it won't happen" about things anymore, unless they're really out there. I think ever since 2020 we've all acknowledged that we find Trump's continued omnipresence in our politics a net negative, to put it very lightly. Specific disagreements about policy have fallen to the side, and my own political metamorphosis from lib-right to lib-center or whatever I am have made me more amenable to the Democrats on policies I was previously much more skeptical of.

No. Everybody in Denmark outside of a few random lunatics, hate Trump or are at the very least against him. That goes for everybody on the left, everybody on the center-right and even a good chunk of the far right, I'd say. Before the election a poll showed that Trumps support in Denmark was in the single digits and that was BEFORE all the stuff about taking Greenland from us, starting a trade war with us and effectively destroying the western world order.

Immediate family are all anti-T. In extended family or friends I just try not to talk about it if they disagree.

I'm really sorry you're dealing with that. What was the breaking point?

I think naturally it should at this point. I question how anyone who isn't already apart of the MAGA cult can genuinely be acquainted with Trump supporters.

Well, as someone who lives in a precinct that went almost 80% for Trump, I'd be seriously alienating myself if I didn't. More importantly, though, would mean alienating my children from their friends.

Thankfully, no. I have relatives who are Trump supporters, but I am not too close with them.

I have two friends I know of who voted for Trump though. Ine now regrets it, and says I was right. The other isn't exactly aTrump cultist but is adjacent enough and keeps getting suckered in since he gets his news from Joe Rogan and s***.

No. My parents are both Democrats, I'm a Democrat, and my wife is a green card holder (can't vote) but her understanding of US politics comes from me ergo she cheers for Democrats from the sidelines.

That said, her elderly father (who is a poor manual laborer in a third world country, keep in mind) enthusiastically loves Trump because he's seen him on TikTok... just a little reminder that social media propaganda is more powerful than people think.

Of course there are always that one contrarian idiot defending Trump, luckily the only such guy is just a co-worker and he at least think Trump is wrong on Ukraine and Russia.

No, not yet anyway. In terms of my immediate family I think the only person that might've voted for Trump, if he's even registered to vote is my mom's soon to be husband, and I've never talked politics with him, he just seems like the type that would. Both my parents are Democrats, my Dad's fiancee is a never Trump Republican, my sister is too far left for my tastes, and my brother is apolitical. I have a lot of Trump supporters in my extended family but we all grew distant overtime for reasons largely unrelated to politics.

No, not really. Both of my parents are Republicans, me and my older brothers lean more towards Democrats. My oldest brother (1991) is something of an MSNBC centrist generic liberal, but me and my middle brother (1996) are both much further to the left.

For me, I’m far enough to the left that you get your guns back. “Under no pretext…”

My dad and brother like Trump. I've always thought of myself as someone who is above letting politics impact my relationships, but since he was inaugurated it's been weighing on me. I don't understand how they could support this.

None of my friends are Trump suppporters.

My parents are more or less Trump supporters, I don't think either of them has a good understanding of politics in general though.   I still call them every week (sunday evening) to talk about anything though.  We do trips together every now and then too.   I just put their politics on ignore and let it all go really, if they want to rant I'll just be an ear for it.

I don't really think I have any MAGA friends now that I think about it...?   Pretty much all the non-family people I hang out with are pretty left wing and very much anti-Trump.
