Man it would've been so hilarious if Kamala won the EC but lost the PV. It could've EASILY happened.

The "EC always favors the GOP" is a stupid talking point that needs to die. The truth is that it's a completely arbitrary system that does not always favor one side or the other. The fact that the past 2 GOP presidents were first elected despite losing the PV is just a coincidence. In 2004, 2012, and most recently 2024, the Democrats massively overperformed in the EC relative to the PV. In the beginning of election night, it looked like Kamala losing the PV but winning the EC was a real possibility. Kamala needed ONLY 3 more states to win the election: WI, MI, and PA. She lost the tipping point state, PA, by just 1.7%. This is despite losing the popular vote by a comfortable margin.

If Harris picked Josh Shapiro and 10/7 never happened, the 270-268 map could’ve happened even if she lost the PV. The EC-PV vanishing was one of the more shocking aspects of the election.

I'm not going to lie there was an hour or two there where I found myself legitimately wondering "Are we going to see a reverse 2016 where Trump actually wins the popular vote but loses the electoral college?"

It looks like the EC will be exactly in line with the popular vote rather than biased in Kamala's favor, but it was a possibility.
