I can't help but feel she does.

If Biden stayed in the race and loses, she is the VP that could have saved the race. Instant front runner for 2028 with good headlines.

If Biden won, another four years as VP.

Thoughts?

That is true, she likely lost her chance at 2028, but I question how well she would actually do in the primary in a world where Biden just lost.  And it seems pretty obvious now that Biden would have lost.

Idk, I think she would be considered even more damaged goods as Biden's VP in the event that he goes down much, much worse.

Yeah if Biden had lost a landslide, which seems likely, she would've struggled in '28.

She probably knows in her heart that she should never have even got this far given her electoral track record since 2010, so no, she's still laughing all the way to the bank.

I'm not sure Biden would have lost that obviously worse, though?  There's a reasonable argument he does better in the NE and might even win PA.  MI and WI would likely be bigger losses though, so I don't think Biden would actually win the election.

I firmly disagree - Harris was able to keep it close because there was a lot of excitement and enthusiasm around her candidacy. Anecdotal but I know many people who would've been very unenthused with Biden or sat it out completely. I feel like we would've seen D turnout fall off a cliff everywhere if Biden had stayed in, and persuasion would've been much, much worse. Harris helped keeps things competitive in a way that Biden would not have, especially given the last 100 days would've been nothing but 'Biden old' coverage.

She would've had to win a primary in 2028. The outcome of 2020 hints that her victory in a primary, 4 years later, isn't certain

Before Biden withdrew, Kamala had lower favorables than both Trump and Biden. When she took over for Biden, she got a honeymoon period, and the media fawned over her.  Then, her favorables suddenly swung from about -15 to break-even. A lot of that swing was temporary, artificial relief for sparing us from seeing Biden as the nominee. Had Biden stayed in the race and lost, Harris's favorables would still be -15 now; and her candidacy for 2028 would be DOA

Given what we were seeing with the polls before the assassination attempt, and after the Debate, Biden still had farther he could have fallen.

Harris got a honeymoon bounce which wore off by November.

Harris just didn't have any good options. This is the best one for her, because she had a failed run for the presidency. Had Biden stayed on, she'd be the Dan Quayle to Biden.

I don't personally see Kamala Harris becoming presidential nominee in 2028 either Biden winning or losing. Everything that happened was the best way for her to ever become nominee.

I guess I'll take that back of she becomes nominee in 2028 via being the incumbent President in the event of Biden winning in 2024 but dying midterm or becoming incapacitated and resigning.

No, Kamala wanted to be president and knew 2024 was her best shot. If what we think would happen if Biden stayed in the race, actually happened (ie losing by even more than Kamala did irl), she would have the baggage of the loss and her association with Biden. Plus 2028 from this far out looks to be wide open for the Democrats, and it is also likely that like Hillary in 08, Harris starts out far ahead but then loses to an upcoming young star.

I mean, who is the front runner really atm? Gavin Newsom? Josh Shapiro? Maybe Andy Beshear?
