Don't blame him.

That being said, he was basically the only D I know who stood a chance by this point (think Bullock is to tainted to attempt again), so yeah, Daines likely has this seat locked down.

Honestly, if she’s willing, why not say f**k it and have Zephyr run? If nothing else she’d probably get outsized attention from R grassroots who might otherwise send their money to competitive seats. But that’s really up to her because that’d also be extremely f**king stressful.

Electorally the issue there would also be that she may do poorly and drag down whoever runs in MT-01, but  that’s one seat.

Likely R - close to Safe. Could get interesting if the NPV is like D+10 or something, but I generally don't expect Dems to take this race that seriously. MT-01 will be the race to watch in Montana.

Probably should run a good candidate here just in case, and to boost the MT-1 candidate, but there is no reason to actually think it will be competitive.

Zooey Zephyr is literally married to Erin "In The Morn" Reed. You don't get better than that. It's like being the pro-choice candidate who's married to Jessica Valenti. It's almost like being AOC running against Joe Crowley. I cannot understate the amount of money that would be pumped into Zephyr's campaign funds were she to run for any office beyond her current State House seat.

Did this happen with Mike Lee in 2016?

He wouldn’t have stood a chance in a race against Daines. The entire Sheehy campaign was basically a Daines proxy campaign (Sheehy himself had serious issues as a candidate and would not have been able to execute his playbook without consistent "input"), and without the benefit of incumbency (=trust/$$$/free media/name recognition/...) there was no reason to believe he would have put the state in play.

Hard to overstate how jubilant Republicans in the state are that Tester is history. The fact that he lasted until 2024 tells you a lot about their party, though.
