I'm fascinated that you really don't need any experience for an ambassadorship post. And both parties are guilty of nominating the highest doner to their campaign/inaugural fund and their friends in general; most recently Biden did that for Amy Gutmann the former PA university president and tapped her for Germany, former LA Mayor Eric Garcetti for India, & former mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel for Japan. Do all they basically do is reside in the specific country and just host foreign leaders?

I think in many, if not most cases, ambassadors (from any country to any other) are mostly ceremonial and the real work of an embassy is done by the permanent staff.

For a very funny fictionalized (but not very?) behind-the-scenes look at an embassy's inner workings, try to find the "Antrobus" collections by the writer Lawrence Durrell, better known as the author of the "Alexandria Quartet" of novels and other works.  Durrell was in the British Foreign Service in various countries after World War II and wrote a bunch of stories about embassy life based on his experiences.  The first collection "Esprit de Corps" is truly hilarious, while the second "Stiff Upper Lip" is not quite at the same level, but still pretty good.  There's a third one called "Sauve Qui Peut" that I've never seen.

So I guess it’s not Kari Lake. Also, for a second, I thought this was Sen. Ron Johnson!

Khan was phenomenal. This shows that he's already not listening to Vance, as keeping Khan was one of his very few good ideas.

Ambassadorships to rich allies and holiday destinations (most of NATO, Japan, the Caribbean, etc.) have traditionally been patronage appointments. They're expected to use their personal wealth and connections to promote trade and other relations while career diplomats run the day to day. Career diplomats typically only lead less desirable missions. Countries like China, Russia and India also often get political operators because of the sensitivity of those posts.

Anyway, it's nice of Trump to offer Kim a consolation prize. Or maybe Don Jr. asked Sr. to send her away for a few years? 😂

"Desirable" ambassadorships and those to key allies or large countries are usually sinecures for key supporters or cushy semi-retirements for old politicians. More challenging or "hardship post"-type ones are usually filled by career foreign service personnel.

Per Politico, Collins, Murkowski, and Cassidy are all leaning against RFK Jr.  Just one more and he’s toast.  Pretty clear he’s not getting any crossover from Democrats (which was always obvious, Republican wishcasting aside)

According to the betting markets Kash is the best positioned of the four, followed by RFK, and then Tulsi and Pete are the most endangered.

Sounds about right. The reporting is that Patel isn't facing much resistance from Republicans.

I don't even see what's so bad about Kash Patel. Pete Hegseth is the only one I have problems with.

I think RFK might get bailed out by some Dem votes. Rumors are circulating that Sanders and Booker are open to him. Pete and Tulsi both have an uphill battle but just by virtue of being first and being more palatable to the largely internationalist Senate GOP, Pete probably has the better shot.

The only source for the BS claim that Booker and Sanders are open to him is discredited nonsense from a rando whose twitter bio literally says "RFK Jr advisor"

Not sure why folks are falling for this bizarre and outlandish wishcasting from anti-vaxxers

No, it comes from public comments that they made. They have both had the chance to crush the speculation and refused to do so. The fact that they've refused to do suggests the party doesn't really want to whip on this, either.

Americans give Trump’s current slate of nominees a thumbs down, according to new Fox polls.

When asked about each appointee individually, Gabbard, Hegseth, and Patel are underwater in support.

Not sure what those people who were saying he and his administration would be popular were smoking.

I'll absolutely take this though. It's clear these are going to be a very difficult 4 years for him in many ways, and we will be here holding the line.

Also, looks like that honeymoon people we're saying was gonna happen for him is over before it even started.

The good thing is that it probably puts to rest the possibility Trump is going to end up having unshakably strong approval ratings throughout his presidency. I don’t think Biden ever got such low numbers during his transition four years ago, and look at where he’s at. Approvals for his pre-Presidency were in the +30s.
