...and i wish more republicans would do the same.  the republicans have an annoying habit of dumping on someone if they become what they deem to be a political 'liability' (i.e. george ryan, jane swift, and now taft).

no american family, not even the bushes, have been more loyal to the republican party than the tafts.  so please republicans, return the favor.

I agree.  He hasn't been that bad a governor.  he's no Gray Davis, John Rowland, or even a Jim McGreevy.  He's far from perfect, but the level of sandbagging is way over the top.

George Ryan is not in the same category. He really is a liability, beacuse there were substantial criminal activities in his office. It has yet to be proven the extent of his involvement, but there is no question about the number of illicit and unethical activities that occured during his tenure as Secretary of State.

exactly, nothing has really been proven.  he made some bad decsions.  in the end it all turn out to be pretty minor, but the republicans cut him loose.

at least most of the democrats stood behind bill clinton.

What has Taft done that was so bad that even Ohio Republicans strongly dislike him? In 2002 he was re-elected by a 20 point margin! 58% - 38%! Now it seems like he's the most unpopular man in Ohio right next to Dennis Kucinich.

It's much deeper than a few bad decisions. The national media covered very little of the story.

George Ryan was always known as a deal-maker, going back to his days in the legislature. He carried that culture of deal-making to the Secretary of State's office. An attitude in the office that mirrored the old Chicago machine was well known, and the huge number of jobs are an attractive source of patronage.

The arm-twisting to get campaign contributions through various local drivers licensing branches resulted in a plan that gave out commercial truck licenses for bribes in the form of campaign contributions. This has been established and proven. It isn't the only example of illicit campaign activities, just the one that caused deaths.

As it unfolded the only question many of us IL Republicans were asking was whether Gov Ryan would be indicted while still in office, or if they would wait. Loyalty is misplaced when the weight of the evidence indicates serious wrong-doing, as it did even early in Ryan's term.

Even in Cincinnati, Kucinich is more popular than Taft is.

My big problem with George Ryan is that he echoed his distant predecessor Governor Altgeld in letting murderers off scott free for no reason. This was a huge mistake, and will come back to haunt Illinois.

Good post Walter. The GOP and the Democrats like to "distance" themselves from people who run low in stupid public opinion polls.

Did you know that William H. Taft's father was a founding father of the Skull and Bones Society?

I actually do like Bob Taft, but strongly dislike the idea of raising taxes. Robert Taft is my favorite Taft, especially his ideas about how the GOP are the real Jeffersonian-Lockean liberals. WH Taft I respect but do not adore, being a big fan of Teddy's.
