Sarpy County, Nebraska, home to Offutt AFB, HQ Strategic Air Command, now USSTRATCOM.  Mostly rural through the 60s, increasingly suburban since then.  Just south of Douglas County (Omaha):

Year   Winner            %R-%D,   Third %, Other %
1960:  Nixon          55.3 - 44.7
1964:  Johnson      44.2 - 55.8
1968:  Nixon          52.5 - 30.6, Wallace 17.0
1972:  Nixon          74.7 - 24.3
1976:  Ford            60.4 - 37.5, Other 2.1
1980:  Reagan       67.0 - 24.5, Anderson 7.3, Other 1.2
1984:  Reagan       74.3 - 24.2, Other 0.5
1988:  Bush           64.5 - 35.0, Other 0.5
1992:  Bush           50.4 - 26.4, Perot 22.8, Other 0.3
1996:  Dole            57.7 - 32.1, Perot 9.3, Other 0.8
2000:  Bush           64.0 - 32.3, Nader 2.9, Other 0.8
2004:  Bush           69.0 - 30, Other 1.0

In my suburban subdivision, I saw one Bush yard sign, no Kerry signs, around 5% of the cars had a Bush sticker, perhaps 1% a Kerry sticker.

My county has only gone Democratic 5 times since 1892. (1912, 1964, 1996, 2000, 2004)  All other election years it has gone Republican.

This year Kerry won my county by 0.24%

Yes, it is a solid Republican state, no question about it.  Having grown up a Republican in Nassau County, NY, it is nice to be among soulmates, politically.
Explanations for those counties that have strayed:
Thurston - entirely an Indian Reservation.
Dakota - Meat packing industry here (South Sioux City)
Saline, Butler, Greeley, and Sherman:  Large immigrant populations from Ireland or Germany (Catholic).  I don't mean large total populations as they are rural areas.  The immigrants came from east coast cities in the 1870s through 1890s and retained their big city political allegiances.  (Greatly simplified explanation, but that is the basic picture).

Interesting that the two biggest population counties (Lancaster--Lincoln, and Douglas--Omaha), only went Democratic in the Johnson landslide of 1964.

McHenry County, IL:

Republican every time since 1960, and almost always by comfortable margins.  The closest # of votes margin was 64 with about 4K votes separating the two candidates.

I'm "proud" that I'm the only one here who came from a parish that voted for Barry Goldwater and George Wallace--no political correctness for us--but still went with GOP softies like Ford and G H W Bush. Only two Democrats carried it in 12 elections (Kennedy and Clinton in '96)

1984 - R

2000 - R
2004 - R

The area is socially and fiscally conservative but will support a moderate Democrat, such as the state senator Mike Machado.

I've lived in seven different counties since the mid-sixties.  Three are in Oregon.  Polk county only voted for one Democrat, Johnson in 1964.  Most of my upbringing was in Marion Co, which voted for two Dems, Johnson and Clinton '96 (not 92). I went to college in Lane Co, which, as seen above, only went Republican four times: three for Nixon and Reagan 1980.  Then I lived in three counties--Washoe Nevada,  Ada Idaho, and Decatur Kansas, all three which did not vote for any Dems for the entire period. I now live in Adair County Oklahoma.
1960 Nixon                  1984 Reagan
1964 Johnson              1988 Bush
1968 Nixon                   1992 Bush
1972 Nixon                  1996 Dole
1976 Carter                  2000 Bush
1980 Reagan                2004 Bush

Well, my constituency in the UK has voted for the labour party every time since the early 60s I believe.

Durham City (parliamentary constituency) has been Labour since 1935 and my parish (Bearpark) is Labour: 7 Labour; 3 independents and 1 Resident (Tory)

My village (solid Labour) now has Liberal Democrat City councillors because we were included with a more populous Witton Gilbert, where the Liberal Democrats are dominant nowadays. City of Durham District Council went Lib Dem in 2003
