She keeps being given jobs that her actual skills as a journalist (access journalism, essentially) aren't sufficient for. She'd be much happier writing profile pieces for the Sunday Times rather than being a very bad talkshow host.

However, the problems with the BBC News operation are much deeper than personnel selection, so replacing her wouldn't fix much on its own.

We're handing the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

We're handing the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

The Diego Garcia base will continue operating on a 99-year lease, so doesn't look like the Chagossians will be returning there anytime soon, though.

Luckily protests are already happening in the German speaking community of Belgium

The important part, from our perspective, is that this will now be somebody else's problem.

*If* Mauritius allows the Chagossians to return home and have their national rights respected then this is a good move.

*When* Mauritius doesn’t do that, and makes no effort to respect Chagossian identity at all because - spoiler alert - they don’t regard them as separate people, this will be yet another failure of British foreign policy.

It is the correct thing for us to do, regardless. We should never have evicted the Chagossians in the first place, and it is pretty common knowledge that we were bullied by the US into doing so.

No, the correct thing to do is hand it back to the Chagossians. Not hand it to Mauritius who have no intention of respecting their identity. This is just us washing our hands of the matter.

UK/Mauritius joint statement

It does say "Mauritius will now be free to implement a programme of resettlement on the islands of the Chagos Archipelago, other than Diego Garcia, ..." but that doesn't actually commit Mauritius to actually do that.

Yes, the slightly confusing thing about all of this is that the very embarrassing territorial dispute that has just come to an end was not directly related to what happened to the Chagossians. Resolving that means dealing with the Americans.

A title that doubles up as justification for immediate sectioning is a rare thing, and yet here we are.

Here.

I got as far as the first four words of the subtitle — beware your liberal values — and noped out of there.

It's certainly an interesting way to respond to suggestions that he might not be entirely mentally stable.

https://news.stv.tv/scotland/scottish-liberal-democrat-leader-alex-cole-hamilton-to-campaign-on-behalf-of-kamala-harris-in-key-state

Scottish Lib-Dem Leader is apparently going to be campaigning for Kamala Harris in Scranton. This bodes poorly.

Some Americans, if they care about this, will inevitably say "but we stopped taking orders from you in 1776!"

A similar fate fate will await him to that was experienced by Truss. Foreign politicians increasingly in our interconnected age make the mistake of assuming that the average American cares about their home political arena to the same degree their arena cares about American politics. It's a symptom of the global power and cultural imbalance.

For example, I saw polling today that found 20-30% more Canadians can identify American political leaders (not just Harris/Trump/Biden) than some of the provincial premiers. Obviously that's neighboring Canada, so the divergence is rather extreme, but I guarantee you the inverse is not true about PP, Singh, or Blanchet.

Alex Cole-Hamilton is not delusional enough to believe that Americans will know who he is. He is just volunteering as a run of the mill volunteer whilst on holiday.

It'll probably be more useful than anything else Cole-Hamilton does to fill his days as leader of a Liberal Democrat branch office (and that goes for all of the party's other elected officials too).

At least one prominent Tory (former Cabinet member Rob Buckland) has been campaigning for Harris.
