You can probably still visit other countries, depending which one you choose, but as with the last poll, pick the country you would rather live and work/study in for at least ten years.

Greece. It’s got amazing scenery, history, and food. Never went commie either, longstanding NATO ally. Probably the most developed and progressive country in the region with the best quality of life.

Poland is probably the runner-up, followed by Czechia. Or maybe flip those two around, it’s tough.

Greece is Eastern Europe? South-Eastern, but not eastern.

But obviously Greece. I'm definitely biased though, having a Greek father.

Isn't Greece somewhat impoverished now? I agree that it's the most culturally and aesthetically interesting, but voted Czechia specifically because it's the most developed.

And don't forget that Greece briefly elected commies and neo-Nazis to Parliament not that long ago.

Genuinely surprised you didn't vote Russia for meme purposes or otherwise.

The non-troll answer is yes, it was tempting because Russia is a huge country that offers diverse experiences, but the annoyances about living in a semi-pariah state outweighed those advantages.

HDI for Czechia and Greece are about the same. Life expectancy slightly longer in Greece. Czech GDP is a bit higher.

Hm. Guess I'll switch to Greece, then.

Obviously one of the countries on the Adriatic coast. I guess Croatia is the most sensible so I'm going with that (excluding Slovenia because that's too easy and also honestly not quite as interesting).

If Belarus wasn't a dictatorship, I'd be interested in visiting, since my earliest known ancestors hail from Grodno.

But instead, I'll probably have to say one of the Baltic states, since they're close enough while being freer states. Not sure which one.

I lived in Romania for five years back in the 90s. It was already a pretty cool place back then and I hear that everything improved exponentially after becoming an EU member.
I just hope that the people have also improved and are less avaricious now.

You find a random bridge in the periphery of Skopje exciting? Not sure what you even mean by Blue Cafe.

(and yes, I've actually been to North Macedonia)

I'm referring to the Gazela Shoe Factory, which was once a makeshift HQ for NATO KFOR, Rear Element (the main one being in Film City, right across the border in actual Kosovo).  Tongue

There were only like a couple hundred of us, and I was only there for like 90 days--before we were moved to Pristina or Bondsteel--but that was an awesome deployment.  Yes.  I actually "lived" in an abandoned shoe factory once.  For 3 months.  In the industrial, grimy section of Skopje.

It's probably not called the "Blue Cafe" anymore, but that was a popular downtown Skopje hangout spot for NATO troops + civilians, defense contractors and creepy "expats" (read: sex tourists), right at the foot of that urban mall and near the bridge that separated Christendom from the Mooslum Albanian hood.  There were all sorts of demonstrations and riots right there as we were sitting down enjoying our frappes, because the Macedonian FYROM parliament building was down the block.

Those were the days, mang.

I've heard Czechia is really nice. Greece would be awesome (amazing food, Mediterranean climate, so much history, Turkey bashing), but as a Great Recession victim myself, I wouldn't really feel confident in living a stable life there after the sovereign debt crisis.

Of these, I have been to Czechia, Slovakia, and Russia. Prague is an incredibly beautiful place, but I am more attached to Slovakia and Russia for having spent more time there and getting to know people. Of course, I would be hesitant to live in Russia due to lack of freedoms and geopolitical issues. So I would say Slovakia. But I know there are other beautiful countries in Eastern Europe that I would like a lot.
