Mélenchon says that NFP candidates will withdraw if they poll third but qualify to the 2nd round, in order to defeat the RN.

Headlines are suggesting RN took a "strong lead" in the first round - do they consider 34-29 a very strong lead??

This is the logical move; NFP doesn't really have any chance at winning any triangulaires in which they are third after this round anyway.

"Republicans do not give voting instructions for the second round

"We are fighting the excesses of a far left dominated by La France Insoumise, which wants to demolish our institutions, deconstruct our civilization, and which represents an absolute danger for our country." the Les Républicains party said in a statement. "The National Rally is not the solution for France either, because its demagogic program will lead to chaos and the impoverishment of our country." the text added, affirming that it would let "the French express themselves in conscience.""

Very intrigued with that percentage for LR. Does that mean Ciotti's move flopped and the anti-Ciotti committee is at least saving the furniture or averting total disaster?

That might be the case, but it will really depend on constituency by constituency results. 10% is not nearly enough to be qualified in most places, and it's still below the already pathetic 13% last time, so some losses are inevitable. But with strong local incumbents there's always a chance of quality in enough places to save most of the group. They had 60 incumbent, so if they were able to save 40-50 it'd be a pretty good night.

And it drives home the core message and point of a Popular Front.

I think that is on the premise that NFP will be at least 2nd in most seats.  He is doing this more to pressure ENS to do the same when they are in 3rd place.

With 99% of the vote counted Flanby ahead in a three way contest. He should be favored in the runoff.

NFP 37.65% (Flanby)
RN 30.87%
LR 28.64% (incumbent)
------------------------------------
LO 1.98%
REC 0.86%

It isn't a massive lead, but it is a clear lead, especially when you're talking of electoral blocs in the 30s and 20s.

Ciotti's outfit at 4% of the vote is pretty good.

Even if Macrons party dropped  out for LFI the vast majority of their voters would prefer RN anyway .

Good thing that it looks like Macron will ally with the left to block them from taking over

I'm pretty sour on Melenchon ever since he said he'd abandon the French to become an immigrant party. But what he doesn't understand is that immigrants are even more socially conservative than natives and more prone to fascism, even if they support welfare benefits.

Well, hopefully Macron's plan all along was in fact actually for RN to win and for them to fail in government and become unpopular as a result.

And hopefully he is enough of a super-genius to ensure that actually happens, rather than this backfiring disastrously.
