Both Dems are good, but Hatfield was also impressive. Voted Hatfield and Merkley.

Rob Wyden by far.  An excellent Senator, a real policy-focused workhorse who is serious about finding ways to work with the other side when possible without compromising his own principles, and generally seems a decent fellow (although obviously you never know with these folks).  Arguably one of the best current members of the Senate (not the best, but certainly top ten and perhaps even top five).

Second place is tougher as Hatfield and Merkley both have their virtues.  In the end, I think Merkley deserves second.  He’s a solid Senator for Oregon.  While I don’t always agree with him (I/P being a great example) and I cannot stress enough that you never know what politicians actually are like/believe, I always get the sense that he genuinely believes what he is saying and really is trying to make a positive difference.  I really respect that kind of seeming sincerity of good intent whether it be from Merkley, Sanders, Sherrod Brown, Russ Feingold, or folks farther away from my own views.

This isn’t to say Hatfield was a bad Senator, but his various ethics issues - worst of which saw him investigated by the FBI for bribery -  along his votes in favor of confirming Rehnquist, Robert Bork, and Clarence Thomas (the former could be deference to POTUS, but the latter two were simply indefensible) give the silver medal to Merkley.

Hatfield was great. Wyden has done good work on a lot of issues. I like Gordon Smith as well.

Hatfield is easily one of the best GOP Senators nationwide since the end of World War II.
