Valentina Gomez, a Republican candidate for Missouri secretary of state, stoked outrage with a video in which she ran down a street while wearing a protective vest and said: “In America, you can do anything you want, so don’t be weak and gay. Stay ing hard.”

Gomez’s campaign director told NBC News: “You want to be gay? Fine be gay. Just don’t do it around children.” The statement also included familiar far-right complaints about drag shows, pronouns and transgender rights.

There surprisingly are a couple of polls for the GOP primary for this race, though they're from a couple months ago--she was polling 2nd behind Denny Hoskins and Caleb Rowden (who has now dropped out of the race) with tons of undecideds...I could see a viral stunt like this giving her a bit more name recognition, so she's at least a serious candidate...which is terrifying.

In their minds, everyone is heterosexual because that's the way God wants it, heterosexuality is innate from birth, and everything would be fine if not for the handful of deviants that are drinking Gay Woke Juice.

Seriously though, a lot of it is thinking that gay = sexually active behavior, which it doesn't have anything to do with.

For some reason, people are fine with pre-pubescent children having wholesome crushes on opposite-sex classmates.  That's not considered "immoral" and the heterosexuals are not branded as "groomers" for allowing it to happen.

The inverse of this is a politician that goes around Provincetown or Palm Springs saying, "You want to be a heterosexual?  That's fine [not really].  Just don't do it around the kids."
