Horrendous decision. As a personal rule, I don't eat anywhere that has this rule.

Of course that basically never happens anyway (this could be a Regional thing?). The only recent one around here was the Flowood Dickeys Barbecue Pit, which banned free refills the same day they switched the TV from Fox News to Newsmax.

This isn't a problem if you get a shake.

Only good way to get cheap fountain sodas are convenience stores, they are way too expensive at restaurants.

Yeah I'm sure McDonald's staff will be policing the soda fountain. Looking forward to the Worldstar videos in Democratic cities about that.

I think most new or renovated McD's I've been in the last few years have had the soda fountain behind the counter, maybe it's a Canadian thing. I'm partly to blame though, in high school I once just walked in and filled a water bottle with Orange Crush. Don't tell anyone.

Right on schedule as expected. Your type loves to talk about cities, but pretends like these homogeneous and rural areas infested with meth and unemployment are Mayberry.

It's more so that the soda station in the lobby goes away entirely and only the kitchen one remains.

it's obviously an attempt at saving money, anyone that says otherwise is silly  Trying to push your agenda due to this is sillier.

McDonald's is already outrageously expensive and that's something that predated inflation. I think until last year they had $1 sodas. Personally, I can't remember the last time I actually ate at a fast food restaurant (as opposed to eating in the car or taking it home) to take advantage of free refills.

Soda prices have also increased insanely over the past couple years. I find the remedy for that to be quite simple though. Take advantage of good sales, but otherwise stop buying it. It's not exactly a bad thing to give up or cut back on.

Good. As long as pop is to remain legal it should at least be highly regulated.

For once, corporate greed is actually doing this fatass country a favor.

How many of you fatasses need to drink more 50 grams of sugar per sitting?

I drink Diet Coke (so just chemicals instead of sugar or calories), but if I'm out watching a game or something at a sports bar with free refills, I probably wind up drinking 10 glasses over a few hours.  If you're just sipping on it, you lose count.

Now, I can't imagine that full-service restaurants will be as quick to go that route.  Part of this seems to be a general push from fast food away from encouraging in-person dining all together.

Finally, I'll note that the article says that actually charging for refills is at the discretion of the owner, and many will probably view it as more hassle than it's worth.  I know Chick-fil-A has had the fountains behind the counter for years but always offers free refills if you ask.

fast food restaurants like McDonalds are already becoming stupid in regards to prices (it's hardly any cheaper for me to go to McDonalds as it is to go to my local sports bar, and it's certainly better quality at the latter. I haven't been to McDonalds in over a year because of that.) and I bet you they won't change prices one bit with this, if they try to push this nationwide.

Unless you literally have no other options or no time to spare, there's not gonna be any reason to go to fast food places anymore.

What worries me about this is the self-serve soda fountain going away. I need my custom 75% Sprite, 25% Hi-C Orange blend.

I was far more distraught when Torchy's stopped offering in-house cane sugar sodas for coke products, this stuff is all 'meh' and won't be missed... The only time I really drink regular soda nowadays is with either Pizza or Mexican Food, and even then I just buy the tiny little 7.5oz cans just for the 'bite' without consuming my day's worth of sugar in one can.

The lack of free iced tea refills at restaurants is by far the biggest reason I feel I could never live in Europe.  It’s literally the single thing that makes me feel most American.
