Inspired by a thread in the history section: If Reagan didn't survive the attempt on his life and HW Bush becomes prez in March 1981, how do you see the 1984 election ending up with Gary Hart as nominee? Assume he doesn't have a public scandal over an affair. Is this a real race or does Bush cruise to reelection?

If things worked out well with the economy, I think Bush wins easily.

If the recession of 1982 continues past, say mid-1983 (i.e.: develops into something similar to what happened that contributed to Bush 41's real-life loss in 1992); Hart might have a shot at a victory.

The Bush administration would be pretty much the same as Reagan's IOTL, certainly for his first term. One thing I can think of is that TEFRA wouldn't happen- the Reaganites would lose their minds, and Reagan acquiescing to it IOTL was a case of "only Nixon can go to China". The Volcker shock happens, the economy bounces back for everyone but the agricultural and industrial workers by 1984, and Bush runs on some variation of Morning in America where he can say he led the country through political, economic, and moral crisis. He's also sure to keep the party united by picking a more conservative running mate, which I think would be Reagan's "First Friend".

Hart's forward-thinking, business-focused Atari Democrat campaign would be hated by labor, nor could he swing the suburbs like future neoliberals after Reagan's martyrdom. He may be palatable to liberal social movements, but it wouldn't be enough, and we'd probably be in a Third Red Scare if Hinkley was successful (fears of "moral decline" would erroneously merge with fears of left-wing terrorism here as Americans looked for someone to blame). Busing denies him Massachusetts just like Mondale.

Poppy is highly favored here with the economic recovery in 1984, which would also have happened under him. Hart is probably a more formidable challenger than the stiff Walter Mondale, but I don't see him winning at all. Bush would also have benefitted from sympathy votes like Johnson 20 years prior, albeit to a lesser extent as he ascended to the presidency much earlier in the term.

Senator Gary Hart (D-CO)/Former Governor Cecil Andrus (D-ID): 70 EV. (43.61%)

Bush didnīt have the strenghs of Reagan nor LBJ. Hart would have likely selected a fine VP pick. Well, the 1984 ads were good and could still had worked, but one could say that Morning in America is indirectly an attact to the Carter/Mondale years and that Bear in the Woods is an attact on Mondale's foreing policy stances and Carter's failings in the area.
