Better clouds tonight than during the eclipse I guess.

Hopefully there is not too much disruption to electronics.

For those of you in the most northern part of the 48, give us an update if you saw aurora borealis, and how visible it was in your area.

I'll also be looking out. The sky is relatively clear here.

Yes of course.
Give us an update, when you wake-up. Tell us what you saw (if anything).

This will cost him Michigan. This will hit his credibility on electric vehicles and renewables. Trump will attack him for lost hours of solar power generation!

No. It’ll cost Biden the election because “under Trump we didn’t have solar storms.”

Tasmania and Southern Australia skies are lighting up.

The consistent colour is due to quantum mechanics.

When the energised particles are trapped in the Earth's magnetic field, the receiving atoms only energise and release light at a defined frequency, hence the consistent colours.

If quantum mechanics was not a thing, each atomic relaxation would be at a different colour.

It's a but like driving a car, but you can only go 20, 60 or 100 mph. There is nothing between.

Also if Quantum Mechanics was not a thing, there would be no atoms. Wink

This could continue through the weekend so if you had clouds tonight you might have another chance.

Supposedly, with G5 storms, an aurora can be viewed as far south as Florida and Southern Texas, which is crazy. From the sources I've seen we're likely to remain at a G4, but a low end G5 is possible.

G5 was reached!

There were reports of sightings in metro Atlanta and as far south as Savannah, although I didn't see anything (lots of light pollution around here).

Is social media exaggerating this stuff? There were some pretty great images floating around that claimed to be taken in Jackson or its suburbs, but no one I know in person (including as far north as Nashville) was able to see anything.

Newer phone cameras are better at gathering light than human eyes, so photos are probably going to give a better view than looking at them directly.  Although looking with the camera might work just as well.

I don't think it was exaggerrated. You can't see it everywhere because of a variety of factors unfortunately.

If you still have your eclipse glasses from a few weeks ago you can supposedly see the sun spot that's causing this with them. I just checked but I don't see anything.😕

You had to use a phone camera for it to really work . I couldn’t see these colors with my naked eye

Honestly, I think people posting pictures like "hey check out these great shots of the auroras!" without clarifying that they couldn't actually see them, it's just what their phones happened to pick up qualifies as "exaggeration."

Nonetheless, I'll still look for them tonight and use my phone to see if I can pick anything up.
