1972: NOTA
1976: Maybe Jerry Brown or Jackson, No really good candidates
1980: I don't know, of the two Carter
1984: Either Hollings, Hart, or Glenn
1988: Gore
1992: Clinton
1996: Clinton
2000: Gore, I guess
2004: Clark

Clark would have ran as a Republican in 2004 is that was the open nomination.  There's nothing to prove that he's a Democrat outside of comments he made in October 2003.  I would have had alot of problems supporting him in the general had he come away with the nomination.

I'm a Republican... but I'll answer anyway. Keep in mind that none of these options are really great:

1972: Jackson
1976: Jackson or Udall
1980: Ugh... <throws up>
1984: I dunno... Glenn? Hollings?
1988: Gephardt... and that's saying something
1992: Uh... Kerrey... Harkin... wait, did Perot win the North Dakota Democratic Primary? Then Perot!
1996: nobody
2000: Uh... neither Gore nor Bradley strike me... vote LaRouche, and hope for a Bushslide?
2004: Graham, maybe Gephardt or Lieberman

I actually did vote in the Democratic primaries of 1984, 1988, 1992, 2000 & 2004.  So who I write in, for those years, is who I voted for.

1952  Russell
1956  Stevenson
1960  J. F. Kennedy
1964  L. B. Johnson
1968  R. F. Kennedy
1972  Chisholm

1980  Carter
1984  Hart
1988  Gore
1992  Brown
1996  Clinton
2000  Gore

Here's who I really did vote for:

1984:  Hart
1988:  Simon
1992:  Tsongas
1996:  Clinton was unopposed, so I voted for Lugar in the Republican primary
2000:  Bradley
2004:  Dean

I have an independent avatar because although I am very liberal and I've always supported Democrats for President, I also vote for Republicans (and others) for other offices.  I was a member of the Democratic party in 1984 and 1988.

The 1912 election is one of the most fascinating in American history. Someone wrote a very good book about it just a couple of years ago. I can't remember the title or author, though; can anyone out there help?

There is no way Taft would have won that election under any circumstances. The electorate was more liberal (or "progressive") than probably at any other time in American history, and there was no way he was going to convince anyone (although he tried) that he was a liberal candidate. If TR had gotten the Republican nomination, he probably would have won, although it's not certain-- Wilson was a strong candidate and the Democrats had done well in the 1910 mid-terms, so they were in the ascendancy. Also, in a Wilson-Roosevelt contest, there may well have been a conservative third-party candidate, and if he was a Republican, as would have been likely, he could have drawn some of the conservative Republican vote away from TR.

I'll be back with my primary picks. I participated in a lot of them but need to refresh my memory as to all the candidates who ran in particular years.

I'll go back to 1968, since that was the year I started following politics.

2008: Biden (though he'll probably be out by the time I get to vote)
2004: Clark initially, then Kerry (I voted for Kerry in the primary)
2000: Gore
1996: Clinton
1992: Clinton
1988: Babbitt initially, then Dukakis (Babbitt was out by the time I got to vote)
1984: Mondale
1980: Carter
1976: kept holding out for Humphrey, so I never endorsed anyone
1972: Muskie
1968: Kennedy
